    • A centralized queue for a network printing system is provided for allowing clients of a network printer to make job requests and enter a spot in a job queue without transmitting the actual print job data to the network. More particularly, an imaging device protocol (IDP) is provided which operates independently of the network layers below and only requires that a transport protocol/port be bidirectional. A wide variety of heterogenous network protocols may be supported by IDP for placing all of the incoming print job information in a print queue regardless of the protocol. Print job information from both IDP and non-IDP protocol/ports may be placed in the print queue by emulating IDP on the non-IDP protocol/ports. As a result, job information for all of the print jobs attempting to access a busy printer may be stored in the print queue so that the print jobs can be printed by the printer with a fair arbitration once the network printer becomes available.

    • An apparatus and a method are provided for printing data through a network communication between a printer network card and a client device having a server message block (SMB) protocol for sharing a file and a printer and a transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP) protocol to establish the network communication. The method comprises analyzing a type of data packet received from the client device, determining if the data packet can be continuously received from the client device or the receipt of the data packet should be suspended based on a result of the analysis, and requesting the TCP/IP protocol to restrict the receipt of the data packet when it is required to suspend the receipt of the data packet as a result of the determination, and transmitting a receipt restriction signal to the client device by using the TCP/IP protocol.

    • A printer receives commands from a host device in association with a print request, determines if the printer's resources permit processing of the commands received from the host when in a non-discard mode, enters the printer into a discard mode when resources associated with the printer are not available to permit processing the commands and, unless a command is protocol control command, discards commands to maintain communication between the printer and the host. The printer exits discard mode when a command received from the host is a protocol control command requesting that the printer exit discard mode. The host buffers commands associated with the print request, transmits commands to the printer for printing, receives indication that the printer is entering into a discard mode and resends the commands buffered on the host to the printer when the printer indicates it has exited discard mode.
