    • A new liquid crystalline light modulating cell and material are characterized by liquid crystalline light modulating material of liquid crystal and polymer, the liquid crystal being a chiral nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy and including chiral material in an amount effective to form focal conic and twisted planar textures, the polymer being distributed in phase separated domains in the liquid crystal cell in an amount that stabilizes the focal conic and twisted planar textures in the absence of a field and permits the liquid crystal to change textures upon the application of a field. In one embodiment, the material is light scattering in a field-OFF condition and optically clear in a field-ON condition, while in another embodiment, the material is optically clear in a field-OFF condition and light scattering in a field-ON condition. In still another embodiment, the material exhibits stability at zero field in a colored, light reflecting state, a light scattering state and multiple stable reflecting state therebetween, as well as being optically clear in the presence of a field.

    • A photoelastic transducer is constructed with a photoelastic element receiving a 45.degree. polarized light beam with a wave plate providing a 90.degree. phase displacement in its orthogonal components. The element has reflective surface coatings to produce multiple internal reflections so as to lengthen the optical path, and increase the sensitivity of the unit. Analysis of the orthogonal outputs can be according to the difference divided by the sum with one of the outputs being multiplied by the ratio of the D.C. component of the other output to its D.C. component, for the purpose of compensating for changes in tramsmission of the two signals. Alternatively, the signal analysis can be in accordance with the difference between the rates of change of the two signals with each rate of change being multiplied by a factor which is proportional to the square root of the ratio of the other signal to the present signal, for the purpose of compensating for changes in the wave plate dimensions due to factors such as temperature change.

    • An optical waveguide apparatus provides for single-mode and multimode switching or modulation of light wave energy with reduced bias voltages. Optical channels are formed in a crystal substrate by depositing film stripes thereon to cause stress-induced changes in the relative refractive index. Coupling or switching of light waves between the channels is provided by applying a bias which is of reversed polarity at adjacent film stripes, thereby augmenting or diminishing the stress in individual channels. By allowing operation with close spacing of the electrodes and using the enhancement in refractive index change of the stressed substrate in combination with the applied bias, the required control voltage is substantially reduced.

    • Lead phosphate and certain mixed phosphates of lead and strontium are pure ferroelastic materials which can be switched from one strain state to another by mechanical stress. The crystals are transparent to visible radiation and the strain states are biaxially birefringent, the optic axes of adjacent domains separated by a domain wall lying in different spatial directions. Accordingly, if a suitable polarizer and analyzer is employed to extinguish light passing through one strain state, the strain state to which it can be switched will transmit light. Thus is there provided mechanically actuated optical switch. The optical properties of the domain wall likewise differ from either adjacent domain and in conjunction with spatial filtering (and/or optionally polarization filtering) can be used to provide mechanically actuated line scanners.
