    • A position detecting device includes: a liquid having a free surface; a light source configured to irradiate a light flux toward the free surface of the liquid; a dark field pattern provided between the liquid and the light source and configured to form a pattern of the light flux irradiated by the light source; a light-receiving sensor configured to detect the pattern of the light flux reflected by the free surface of the liquid; and an arithmetic unit configured to calculate a position of the pattern from results of detection of the light-receiving sensor, add the results of the detection of the light-receiving sensor in an X-direction and a Y-direction of the light-receiving sensor, and calculate the position of the pattern from an output obtained by adding the results of the detection in the X-direction and the Y-direction.

    • The invention relates to a sensor device for measuring attitude, acceleration or gravitational field and its gradient components. The device includes a spherical cavity (3) which contains a sensor substance in the form of a fluid or some other inertial material having fluidic properties. The cavity (3) is provided with measuring sensors or measuring electrodes (−x, +x; −y, +y; −z, +z) for three different coordinate axes x, y, z, all of said sensors responding to said common inertial mass which fills the cavity (3). Such assembled single compact measuring device can be used for determining any of the said quantities 3-dimensionally.

    • These three new types of leveling instruments do not rely on spirit-level-bubbles in glass vials used in dumpy-levels and in tilting-levels, nor on the so called self-leveling pendulums used in the automatic levels. These new types of leveling instruments use a free mercury surface as a mirror to assure that the line of sight through the center of the cross hairs is horizontal, or has a very small but constant inclination from the true horizontal for all pointings to the leveling rods. In the most precise model, the mercury surface is used to autocollimate the line of sight through the center of cross hairs to be horizontal for every pointing. In the less elaborate models, the mercury surface is used to guarantee that the line of sight through the center of cross hairs has only a very small but constant inclination with the true horizontal. It is important that this inclination stays constant, and it can be adjusted to be less than one tenth of one second of arc if so desired. The mercury levels itself correctly with great precision and consistency, and it has a superior performance if compared to hanging pendulums with friction, or to bubbles with surface tension in level vials, and therefore using mercury as described in this disclosure in leveling instruments will produce better leveling instruments.

    • An apparatus adapted continuously to measure and record small deviations from a true horizontal plane such as those deviations which may occur continuously or recurrently as a result of ground motion and the like. The apparatus comprises a diamagnetic body suspended in a magnetic field of a configuration which constrains the body radially but permits it to move axially within certain limits. The amount of axial movement is used as a measure of horizontal deviation. The suspension is frictionless, and the apparatus may be made to be relatively rugged and stable over extended periods of time. Adjustable magnetic force restoring means are provided to change and control the natural period of the instrument to optimize it performance over a wide range of applied force.
