    • A heat exchanger for extracting thermal energy from a process fluid, comprising a first group of at least one plate-fin heat exchange module and a second group of at least one plate-fin heat exchange module. Each plate-fin heat exchange module includes an inlet, an outlet and a plurality of spaced-apart plates for communicating a refrigerant fluid in a cross-direction to a process fluid. The modules are sequenced alternately with one of the modules of the first group adjacent one of the modules of the second group. The modules are disposed so that the refrigerant fluid flows in a first direction through the modules of the first group and flows in a second opposite direction through the modules of the second group. A supply header connects to the inlets of each heat exchange module in parallel for communicating the refrigerant fluid from a supply to the heat exchange modules. A discharge header connects to the outlet of each heat exchange module for communicating the refrigerant fluid from the heat exchange modules to the supply.

    • In a plate heat exchanger for evaporation of a liquid by means of a heat emitting vapor every second plate interspace forms an evaporation passage (28) and the rest of the plate interspaces form condensation passages (30). Aligned openings (16) in the plates form an inlet channel through the plate heat exchanger for introduction of evaporation liquid into the evaporation passages (28). For enabling use of a large inlet area of each condensation passage (30) and a large outlet area of each evaporation passage (28) the plate heat exchanger is arranged in a container (1), the interior of which is divided in two chambers (6, 7) by the plate heat exchanger itself and a partition (5). Sealing means (13, 26) are arranged in the plate interspaces in a way such that the evaporation passages are closed from one chamber (6) but communicate with the other chamber (7) along the edges of the plates, whereas the condensation passages (30) communicate with said one chamber (6) along the edges of the plates but are closed from the other chamber (7).

    • A cross-current type plate heat exchanger comprising a plurality of vertically disposed heat transfer plates arranged side by side to define fluid passageways through which two fluids to be heat exchanged flow in a cross-current fashion. Each heat transfer plate is formed with a plurality of juxtaposed vertical grooves extending from the top to the bottom of the heat transfer surface of the heat transfer plate, and a plurality of substantially horizontal projections are formed between the vertical grooves to divide the heat transfer area into a plurality of sections. Vertically extending short projections which are lower than the vertical grooves are formed between the substantially horizontal projections in such a manner that the number of such short projections provided in the vertically separated sections is progressively increased so that the bottommost section has the greatest number of short projections. A labyrinth is defined in a space between a gasket and a seal member, and a gas having a higher pressure than any of the fluids to be heat exchanged is fed to the labyrinth.

    • An apparatus of the heat exchanger type embodying a plurality of plates arranged in spaced parallel relation with one another to define a stack of exchanger plates. The stack of plates are arranged to define fluid and vapor passages with separators being positioned in said passages to maintain the plates in spaced relation. The stack of plates are positioned between pressure plates which have top, bottom, and side covers either supported thereon or connected thereto with the entire assembly held together by suitable clamp plates. The side covers utilize fluidic means to apply pressure to the pressure plates so that said heat exchanger utilizes the general principle of nearly equalized pressure between outside and interior surfaces.

    • A counter current heat exchanger is comprised of a plurality of spaced parallel plates located in a rectilinear housing which closes the spaces along two opposed sides and provides a plurality of rows of spaced apertures along the other two sides with the apertures in alternate rows being offset from each other. Primary inlet and outlet collectors are secured to the apertured sides of the housing and have a zig-zag configuration to define parallel portions which have a triangular configuration. Alternate spaces in the collectors communicate with alternate rows of apertures. A rectilinear wall surrounds the primary collectors to define second collectors on opposite sides of the triangular primary collectors.
