    • A sensor apparatus and a safety apparatus which can ensure significantly enhanced safety by monitoring constantly whether the sensor apparatus is operating normally. An auxiliary electrode plate of a small area is disposed in parallel and in opposition to an electrode plate with a short distance therefrom. A switching element is turned on every second for a period of milliseconds repetitively. When the switching element is turned on under the control of a central processing unit, the auxiliary electrode plate is connected to the ground potential, as a result of which a capacitance &Dgr;C effective between the auxiliary electrode plate and the electrode plate is electrically connected in parallel with a capacitor C0 effective between the electrode plate and a machine component, resulting in that the capacitance C0 is increased by a proportion corresponding to the capacitance &Dgr;C. Consequently, change of the capacitance C0 comparable to that brought about upon detection of the human body takes place, whereby a substantially similar detection signal as the human body detection signal is made available. On the basis of this detection signal, it is possible to monitor whether or not the sensor apparatus is operating normally.

    • The present invention includes systems and methods for monitoring the spooling area of a rotatable reel for winding or unwinding an elongated material, for example, a cable. The monitoring system has a detector for sensing the presence and position of a cable surface or object or operator positioned between the detector and the reel. The detector can control rotation of the reel directly, or send a position signal to a computer where the position signal indicates the detected presence and/or position. The computer can have a memory and/or a processor for respectively storing and analyzing the position signal. The computer is operative to compare the position signal to previously received position signals to determine a condition, for example, the amount of cable on the reel, the presence of any object, and/or the existence of a safety-threatening condition. The computer can generate an output signal for use in, for example, controlling the reel speed and/or torque, or the application of brakes.

    • The invention relates to a monitoring and warning apparatus for automatic processing apparatuses, in particular robots. Reactance-determining elements are arranged as sensors on the movable parts of the robot. If the robot arm approaches an object, detuning of the sensor circuit occurs. In that way, it is possible to produce a monitoring or stop signal. A central supply with HF-signals and current permits central monitoring of the function of the sensor circuits and at the same time triggering of warning signals when the sensor approaches an object. That is achieved in that the warning signals derived from sensor signals are used to connect additional loads into the circuit which is supplied from the central current supply means. Therefore, by monitoring the current consumption, it is possible to detect both failure of individual sensor circuits and also the approach of an object to a sensor.
