    • A cardan-type joint has flanges which are arranged on mutually facing shaft ends and preferably have three axially projecting driving pins, respectively, which are mutually staggered and uniformly arranged on the circumference of a common graduated circle. The driving pins are connected with one another in a torsion-proof manner by a flexible joint ring which is provided in corner points with sockets for the driving pins. The multi-part joint ring is formed by a collar of several oval driving loops. Each of the driving loops winds around two adjacent sockets. In order to easily permit relatively large bending angles during rotation, even in the event of a high mechanical and thermal loading of the cardan-type joint, the oval driving loops are indirectly or directly swivellably disposed on the driving pins by a pair of contact surfaces which are round in a meridian section in an axially slidable manner on the socket or on the driving loop. In this case, as viewed radially from the outside, the contact surface pairs may be made concave or convex. In the case of a convex contact surface shape, a spherical shape is preferred.

    • A filament wound fiber reinforced resin matrix composite structure. The structure is particularly adapted for use as a torque drive diaphragm in a rotary wing aircraft hub. The structure comprises a substantially flat diaphragm and a rim. The diaphragm has a central hole therethrough for receiving a shaft and the rim has an inward turning flange for attachment. The diaphragm has an attachment means surrounding the central hole. An alternative embodiment of the structure is a hollow disc having first and second substantially flat diaphragm sides with a rim. The sides have concentric central holes therethrough and attachment means surrounding the holes. The structure comprises a resin matrix, fibers wound substantially tangentially to the central hole with sufficient tension in a multiple circuit pattern to form the structure, and fibers wound with sufficient tension in an essentially circumferential manner to reinforce the rim of the structure. The structure is cured by molding with sufficient heat and temperature in a controlled cure cycle. The structure does not exhibit "oil-canning" in that the flat diaphragm or diaphragm sides do not displace from the substantially flat uniplanar mode when subjected to varying temperatures. The spring characteristics of the structure when constrained as a torque drive remain approximately linear and buckling and snap-through are eliminated during operation.

    • A universal joint is provided and particularly a universal joint of the constant velocity type. The joint is particularly intended for use in drive trains of front wheel drive vehicles. The universal joint includes a pair of members attachable to each of two shafts to be joined, with a curved elongate bridging element connecting the two members. The bridging element extends in a curve from 180.degree. up to several turns in progressing from one of the members to the other. The bridging element is designed to have high resistance to bending in both a direction parallel to and a direction perpendicular to axes of the two connected shafts, when they are aligned. At the same time, the bridging element is designed to have low resistance in torsion or to twisting. These characteristics enable the bridging element to transmit torque from one shaft to the other and yet enable the bridging element to twist or flex so as to accommodate angular misalignment between the two shafts. In a preferred form, the bridging element is of I-shape in transverse cross section and is made of a multiplicity of graphite fibers extending longitudinally thereof and held in a structurally integral shape by means of a binder or coating material, such as a resin.
