    • There is provided an ignition timing control device for an internal combustion engine capable of appropriately performing knock learning by performing knock learning adapted to an engine combustion phenomenon. The inventor has found the principle of a knock reduction effect due to ignition retard is that “if a combustion period moves toward the retard side, a cylinder volume during the combustion period increases, resulting in curbing of rise in the temperature and pressure of unburned gas”. An ignition timing control device according to the present invention is capable of new knock learning based on the principle, which learns a “cylinder volume rate”. The cylinder volume rate is a parameter determined from the amount of change in cylinder volume. Even when an operational status changes, learned ignition timing obtained from knock control means can be set to an appropriate value by reflecting the learned cylinder volume rate.

The method includes steps of setting a first target value indicating a crank angle at a maximum heat release rate and a second target value indicating a combustion noise index; calculating the value of X, which is the difference between a crank angle under the current conditions of a vehicle and the first target value and calculating the value of Y, which is the difference between a combustion noise index under the current conditions of the vehicle and the second target value; setting a third target value indicating a value of Y for the value of X, and calibrating the amount of pilot fuel injected into an engine according to the difference between the value of Y and the third target value.

    • A method of controlling combustion of an engine improves unstable ignition and knocking which may be generated in an engine to which a diesel-gasoline mixed combustion mode and a gasoline mixed combustion mode are applied to low load and high load driving zones. The method includes: determining a combustion mode according to a current driving state of the engine; determining a compression ratio corresponding to the combustion mode; controlling a variable compression ratio device to control a compression ratio of a cylinder; determining whether the combustion state of the engine obtained during the combustion after the control to the compression ratio satisfies a set condition; and performing a compression ratio compensation such that the combustion state of the engine satisfies the set condition with taking a combustion pressure sensor signal as a feedback signal when the set condition is not satisfied.

    • A fuel property detection apparatus detects fuel properties based on cetane number and density of a tested fuel. Tested fuel is examined in terms of ignition timing, and, when the tested fuel has an ignition timing earlier than a threshold, the tested fuel is identified as having a standard cetane number. When the tested fuel has an ignition timing later than the threshold, the tested fuel is identified as having a low cetane number. An advance angle of the ignition timing is increased for yielding a greater ignition timing difference between a light property fuel and a heavy property fuel, and, in such manner, the difference therebetween is detected. When an advancement of the ignition timing is greater than a threshold, the fuel property is identified as heavy, and, when an advancement of the ignition timing is smaller than the threshold, the fuel property is identified as light.
