摘要： Methods and systems are provided for adjusting a cylinder deactivation pattern to improve camshaft phasing. In response to a request for actuating a camshaft phaser of a variable cam timing device, a cylinder deactivation pattern is adjusted by reactivating cylinders that were deactivated while deactivating other cylinders that were active, while maintaining a total number of deactivated/active cylinders. Cylinders are selected for reactivation or deactivation based on their individual camshaft torsion signatures so that sufficient cam torque is generated to actuate the phaser and provide the requested phasing.

The internal combustion engine can be operated in a cylinder deactivation mode for retaining the intake valves (31) of some of the cylinders in a valve closing state. When the internal combustion engine returns from the cylinder deactivation mode, the motor controller (150) executes overlap adjustment processing for controlling the valve characteristic such that valve opening periods of the intake valves (31) are not overlapped between the cylinders.

Each intake valve includes two different lifting levels, wherein the cylinder deactivation arrangement has an even number of cylinders. A first set of cylinders constituted by half of the even number of cylinders have intake valves configured for fully opened and partly opened lifting levels, and a second set of cylinders constituted by the other half of the even number of cylinders have intake valves configured for fully opened and closed lifting levels. The first set of cylinders have exhaust valves configured for fully opened lifting levels and the second set of cylinders have exhaust valves configured for fully opened and closed lifting levels.

A cylinder status module generates a status signal indicating an activation status of each cylinder of the engine. The cylinder status module determines whether one or more of the cylinders are activated. A first pressure prediction module, when all of the cylinders are activated, predicts first intake port pressures for the cylinders of the engine according to a first model and based on the at least one of the position of the throttle and the engine load. A second pressure prediction module, when one or more of the cylinders is deactivated, predicts second intake port pressures for the deactivated cylinders according to a second model and based on the status signal and the at least one of the position of the throttle and the engine load.
