    • Methods and apparatus for joining or repairing wall or ceiling panels such as sheet rock, gypsum boards, plywood, or other generally planar wall panels. Means are provided for permanently joining the edges of wallboard panels, ceiling panels, or the like at any desired position along the length of the wall frame or ceiling framework independent of framing backup studs or joists. Each embodiment of the invention contemplates the use of a plurality of metallic clips adapted to provide a working union or edgewise mechanical bond between adjacent panel edges, by creating an artificial backing in wall regions having no studs or support columns. A preferred clip comprises a generally planar, elongated body having a pair of parallel of reinforcement grooves, and the whole body is preferably stamped from perforated metal stock. A pair of integral, spaced apart, prong-like spring tab structures are formed on opposite sides of the clip body to grasp the edges of a panel. Each spring tab includes an integral, upwardly extending vertical portion disposed substantially perpendicularly to the body and an integral, outwardly curved substantially horizontal flange portion. The horizontal flange portion is separated from its vertical companion by a weakened, scored tear edge which permits manual weakening and removal of the flange by appropriate bending after clip installation. In the preferred clip the spring tabs project towards the clip front to maximize the working area of the body available for fastening to the second or later panels.

    • A fastening device for securing adjacent double-skin foam-core wall panels to the structural framework of a building. One panel has a channel formed in the outer skin which extends laterally inwardly of a gap presented between the adjacent edges of the inner and outer skins. The adjacent panel has a tongue formed along the outer skin which is engaged in the channel. The fastening device includes a clip member and a fastener. The clip member has an edge strip engaged with the channel, a flange penetrating the core terminating proximate to the inner skin, and a medial strip connecting the edge strip to the flange. The medial strip is offset from the plane of the edge strip to provide space for the head of the fastener. The fastener extends through the medial strip, the core and the inner skin and secures the panel to the subgirt. The clip member may be mechanically connected with the channel to increase the suction load resistance of the joint.

    • A controlled release wall structure is provided which relies on controlled strength distribution and which disengages from a building framework at a selected applied load -- failure load -- and collapses in the direction of the applied load, that is, inwardly or outwardly of the building. Under normal wind load conditions, the present wall structure will safely sustain the expected elastic deflection and working stresses. However, under abnormally high loadings such as applied by explosion forces or by tornado and hurricane wind forces, the present wall structure collapses to create a substantial open area whereby a minimal loading is transmitted to the structural framework. The present wall structure protects the building framework from being overstressed during tornadoes or hurricanes; and also is capable of quickly relieving excessive pressures generated by an explosion within or without the building. The present wall structure includes at least one composite panel which spans the distance between at least first and second frame members, and which has one panel end releasably retained on the first frame member. According to this invention the composite panel is provided with a discontinuity in the region between the first and second frame members, which reduces the bending strength of the composite panel. The discontinuity extends parallel with and is spaced at a "selected distance" from a proximate edge of the first frame member. The "selected distance" determines the failure load of the wall structure.
