    • A process for making a heather-dyeable or precolored heather yarn product comprises supplying a first crimped continuous filament yarn in the form of a loose matrix substantially free of filament entanglement and a second crimped continuous filament yarn which is differentially dyeable or precolored with respect to the first yarn. The second yarn is fed through a first entangling or interlacing zone and exposure of the second yarn to a fluid jet in the first entangling zone is randomly controlled to produce a color-point yarn product as the second yarn exits the first entangling zone, in which the color-point yarn product has relatively compact nodal regions of high entanglement of the filaments of the second yarn separated by bulkier regions of the same filaments relatively free of entanglement. The first yarn and the color-point yarn product are then fed through a second entangling zone which randomly entangles filaments of the yarns from yarn to yarn and in which yarn-to-yarn filament commingling is substantially prevented within the nodal regions of the color-point yarn. An apparatus for performing the process includes a randomly controllable fluid valve supplying fluid to the fluid jet in one embodiment, and a randomly controllable yarn guide to move the yarn into and out of the fluid jet in another embodiment.

    • Interlacing means are provided for the interlacing of multifilament yarns exhibiting a yarn channel. At given distances from the entrance and exit openings forming the yarn channel, yarn guides are so arranged that, with the supply of compressed air shut off, the yarn is laid onto the yarn channel so that it extends parallel to its longitudinal direction, and that the straight yarn sections, which are located between the entrance and exit openings of the yarn channel and the yarn guides, are inclined at acute angles to portions of the geometric longitudinal axis of the yarn channel. Furthermore, the blow angle of the blow nozzle is smaller than 90.degree.. The length of the yarn channel equals for smooth yarns maximally 40 mm and for texturized yarns maximally 30 mm. There results exceptionally high yarn advance speeds and a particularly good vortexing of the yarn.

    • A yarn entangling jet has a yarn passageway extending therethrough and an air inlet passageway communicating with an outlet portion of the yarn passageway adjacent the junction with an inlet portion thereof. The outlet portion is preferably of triangular cross-section, comprising a base wall opposite the air inlet passageway and two converging side walls. The inlet portion has one wall coplanar with the base wall and an inlet surface which converges towards the base wall in the direction towards the junction with the outlet portion. An inlet yarn guide is positioned to ensure that the yarn approaches the base wall at the desired angle less than 180.degree.. The jet is in two parts secured together with a threading slot therebetween at one side of the yarn passageway spaced from the base wall towards the apex of the outlet portion.

    • The apparatus for interlacing a multi-filament yarn within an interlacing passage comprises a body member containing at least one substantially spherical recess for receiving a substantially spherical air jet or blow nozzle element selectively movable in predetermined directions to provide two-dimensional adjustability thereof. Due to this selective movability of the substantially spherical air jet or blow nozzle element, there exists the possibility of controllably moving the air stream issuing from the air jet or blow nozzle element so as to interlace the filaments of the multi-filament yarn. The air stream can be moved within a predetermined operating range in order to thereby optimize the interlacing of the multi-filament yarn.

    • A process is disclosed for preparing slubby strands in which a textile strand is passed either over a surface or through a slubbing tool. The surface, if employed, may include a plurality of fluid passages positioned therein. As the strand passes over the surface or through the slubbing tool, high pressure fluid is introduced onto the surface of and through the strand. The high pressure fluid passes through the strand. This passage of fluid through the strand causes the strand to twist and bulk along its length to form a slub which is rapidly removed from the working surface of the slubbing surface or tool as a consolidated slub positioned on the strand. When a surface is employed, the surface may be a moving surface and when the surface includes a plurality of fluid passages, the passages may be vented at a point below the surface. Various apparatus for carrying out the novel method are disclosed as is the novel strand produced thereby. The process is described with particular reference to producing strands of glass fibers.
