    • A device and a method are described for folding a flexible material web using at least one pair of counterrotating laying rollers, between which the material web may be fed to a folding location, the laying rollers being part of a laying carriage which is movable over the folding length of the material web with reversible orientation. The object of the present invention is to guide the material web to the folding location with its position and composition largely unimpaired. This object is achieved in that the laying carriage includes at least two transport bands, which rotate around the laying rollers and set them into motion, the material web is transportable at least partially guided between the transport bands, and the speed of the material web has the same absolute value as the speed of the transport bands.

    • A package of strip material includes a plurality of stacks of the strip side by side where each strip forms a stacked fan folded supply of the strip which is spliced to or arranged so that it can be subsequently spliced to a next adjacent strip for supply of a continuous strip from the package. The side by side stacks are simultaneously built up from the bottom by moving a carriage back and forth below a stationary bottom surface of the stacks with the strips supplied side by side through a slot in the carriage. The stacks are supported side by side as they are built up by rigid side walls of a chute or of a box into which the package is to be packaged for transportation. The tails are supported or arranged so that they are ready for splicing when the package is completed an before transportation. The packaging material can be an evacuated bag or a rigid box. Transfer of the completed stacks is effected simultaneously by a slip sheet arrangement or by moving one of the belts of the carriage as an ejection belt.

    • An apparatus for laying band-like or strip-like material is disclosed, having a carrying structure and a platform, having at least one laying arrangement, which is assigned to the carrying structure and is intended for laying the material, having at least one material-feed device, which is assigned to the laying arrangement, and having at least one receiving device, which is assigned to the platform and is intended for the material which is to be laid by the laying arrangement. The laying arrangement comprises a laying arm, which is assigned to the receiving device, and wherein the platform and the laying arm can be moved at least horizontally, in each case orthogonally with respect to one another and reversibly. The apparatus permits band-like or strip-like material of different width dimensions to be laid, any mechanical conversion of the apparatus being dispensed with, and thus ensures, despite different width dimensions, optimum utilization of the dimensions predetermined by a receiving device, wherein the material-feed device can be moved, with changing direction, in the horizontal movement direction of the platform, but with opposite orientation in relation to the platform in each case, and wherein the laying arm has a horizontal material-guidance region, over the entire width of which the material can be transported. Also specified is a process which realizes the abovementioned requirements, in particular using the apparatus so described.

    • A package of a continuous strip of material comprises a plurality of parallel side by side stacks each containing a length of the strip which is folded back and forth such that each folded portion of the stack is folded relative to the next portion about a line transverse to the strip and such that the side edges of the strip portions are aligned. The strip is continuous through each stack and is connected by a splice from the end of one stack to beginning of the next stack. The package is compressed to reduce the height of the stacks and maintained in the compressed condition by an evacuated sealed bag. The preferred package arrangement uses the package for pay off of the strip in the orientation in which it is formed with the bottom of the stacks resting on a support and the package tilted to one side so that the stacks lean against a support surface for stability. The spliced connection portions extend along one end of the package and are folded to take up the difference in height between the compressed condition and the released condition for unfolding.

The strip is continuous through each stack and can be connected by a splice from the end of one stack to beginning of the next stack. The package is compressed to reduce the height of the stacks and maintained in the compressed condition by an evacuated sealed bag. The package can have the stacks oriented vertically or horizontally. When the stacks are horizontal, the spliced portions are vertical and coplanar with the strips and at alternate ends. When the stacks are vertical, the spliced portions extend from the bottom of the stack along one end of the stack to the top of the next stack. A package can be formed with a tail at the end of each stack ready for splicing, but not yet spliced. Accumulating a twist as the stacks are unfolded is prevented either by pre-twisting the splice portions or by providing the splice portions of alternate stacks at opposed ends of the stacks. The package is formed by the method of folding the strip and securing the folded strip with packaging. The method can further include compressing the folded packaged strip, then vacuum sealing the compressed package.
