    • An apparatus for forming and conveying stacks of documents includes a stacking machine positioned above a conveying machine. The stacking machine includes a compartment for receiving documents to be stacked. Two rotor assemblies are rotated in opposite directions to repeatedly define a closed configuration in which the documents are stacked within the compartment, and an open configuration in which a stack is dropped from the rotor assemblies to the conveying machine. The conveying machine includes a support surface upon which the stacks are sequentially dropped, and a pusher assembly for moving the stacks along the support surface. The pusher assembly includes two chain assemblies that travel around similar yet offset travel paths and carry multiple pusher bars. Each pusher bar is pivotally connected to both chain assemblies such that the pusher bars define a continuous pusher travel path, and the pusher bars remain generally upright around the entire pusher travel path. In a sequential fashion, a portion of each of the pusher bars moves from below the support surface to above the support surface, and thereafter along and above the support surface to push a stack along the support surface. The rotor assemblies and pusher bars are driven by servomotors. The servomotors provide for rapid and intermittent movement of the rotor assemblies and pusher bars, so that the interaction therebetween can be optimized in a manner that permits the apparatus to be reliably operated at a high delivery speed.

    • A stack making machine includes an infeed conveyor for moving successive web segments to an orbital stacker which pushes the segments down from the infeed conveyor and onto one of two pairs of stack support members located to either side of the infeed conveyor. Drives lower the stack support members and place stacks built up on the stack support members on a discharge conveyor. The drives move the stack support members around like paths extending down from a first position under one side of the infeed conveyor beneath the stacker to the discharge conveyor, out away from the discharge conveyor and then back up to the first position. The stacking area is visually and manually accessible.

    • A shingle stacking machine including a shingle stacking station, a shingle bundling station, and a conveyor for removing bundled shingles from the machine. The shingle stacking station includes a pair of parallel and elongated wheel assemblies rotatably mounted to a frame of the machine. A drive mechanism is provided for rotatably indexing each wheel assembly during a drive mode of operation and permits free wheeling of the wheel assemblies during a jam mode of operation. The drive mechanism includes a motor for continuously driving a vacuum operated clutch assembly. The clutch assembly includes a pair of electromagnetic valves for controlling operation of a drive shaft which is connected to the wheel assemblies through an elastomeric belt drive. The shingle bundling station is disposed beneath the shingle stacking station and includes a pair of shelf-like supports pivotally carried on the machine frame. The shelf-like supports are interconnected by an intermeshing gear arrangement driven by a linear actuator. A series of drivers are also provided to align the end and side edges of the shingles deposited at the bundling station. The conveyor apparatus is disposed beneath the bundling station for removing bundles of shingles to an area remote from the shingle stacking machine.

    • A pusher assembly for use with a signature stacker pushes a stack of signatures from the stacker. The pusher assembly includes a pusher bar, a linkage for moving the pusher bar, and a controller for adjusting the length of travel of the pusher bar. The pusher bar is supported for reciprocating movement along a length of travel for engaging the stack of signatures. The linkage is connected to an extendible fluid cylinder which moves the linkage upon actuation to push the stack of signatures from the stacker. The controller actuates the fluid cylinder and is adjustable as a function of signature width for pushing various width stacks from the stacker.
