    • An apparatus is described that converts a manual adjustment procedure of a lathe on an existing pulp-grinding machine into an automated electronic procedure. The pre-existing lathe has a sharpening burr affixed to a movable plunger. The plunger is manually lowered by a hand crank until the burr contacts a surface of a pulp-grinding stone. The present invention replaces the hand crank with a reversible, variable speed motor. A transducer is affixed to the plunger wherein electric signals are produced in response to vibrations resulting from contact between the burr and the grinding stone. The signals are processed by a standard programmable controller to control the motor. An electronic encoder electrically measures the position of the plunger and communicates the position to the programmable controller. When the burr on the plunger contacts the grinding stone, the motor is programmed to automatically stop. The controller can then direct the motor to move the plunger the precise depth required for a specific burr, prior to the lathe making a horizontal pass along the stone. The controller records the contact position of the plunger for the next sharpening procedure.

    • A center lapping apparatus for precisely lapping center holes in opposite ends of the workpiece prior to outside diameter grinding of the workpiece includes a conical lapping stone and a dressing apparatus that supports a dressing stone for periodically dressing the lapping stone. Movement of the dressing stone during any dressing operation is confined to a plane in which an axis of symmetry of the lapping stone lies. A spring loaded pin disposed in a movable head of the dressing apparatus has a slightly tapered end which precisely fits in a stationary hole of a mounting bracket about which the movable head pivots. The tapered end of the spring loaded pin ensures that the dressing stone can always be returned to precisely the same position for a dressing operation despite wear of the spring loaded pin. A precise flat surface of the moveable head slides against a precision flat surface of the stationary plate during pivoting of the movable head. The flat surfaces are parallel to the plane in which movement of the dressing stone is confined.

    • A steel strip grinding machine for the continuous grinding of the upper and lower surfaces of steel strips includes a pair of vertically displaceable spindles into which the grinding rolls are journalled. One of the spindles is slidable axially whereas the other spindle is fixedly secured in the machine frame. The grinding rolls are thus removable through sliding of the axially slidable spindle without having to disassemble any bearings. The lower grinding roll is supportable on a lift truck mechanism for movement in and out of the machine frame whereby removal of such grinding roll for the lower surface of the steel strip can be effectuated without use of a crane. Further, a device for dressing the outer peripheral surface of the grinding roll is provided adjacently to the grinding roll. The grinding roll is made by spraying a thermosetting resin containing hone grains upon a nonwoven fabric in which filaments are entangled at random. Its shaft is formed to be hollow. The above mentioned spindle is so formed as to be engaged at the tip with each end of the shaft.

    • A device for dressing a grinding wheel to a desired precise angle. The device includes a body, preferably in the form of a rectangular block, presenting mutually perpendicular mounting faces. A spindle is journaled in the body for rotation about an axis parallel to the mounting faces. A head is mounted to the spindle at one end of the body block, for rotation with it. Angulation of the spindle is settable by a sine bar at the opposite end of the body. The dressing tip is carried by a slide that is reciprocable on the head, the slide being reciprocated by a crank mechanism turned by an operating shaft coaxial to the spindle. The slide can be set in either of two positions 180.degree. apart for dressing oppositely facing bevels.

    • A wheel guard or pedestal support is disposed for mounting on a grinding machine and provides a dovetail guide into which there may be removably mounted a diamond dresser; a contour forming device; an edge deburring support and like grinding wheel dressing apparatus. Precision lead screws are mounted in member portions of the support, said screws being disposed to be rotated to move a mounted dressing device into a desired precise position. A plunger pin is carried by a member and cooperates with an aperture in a mating member to permit a dressing device to be removed during grinding operations and to be reinstalled at the precise prior dressing position. In one embodiment a contour dressing mechanism is provided in which a diamond-surfaced precisely contoured wheel is rotated in the same direction as the grinding wheel is rotated but at a speed differential of about 400 surface feet per minute. This operation of the contour dressing mechanism provides a dressing of the grinding wheel whereby the wheels and dresser are kept at a relatively cool condition and the diamond wear is at a very low rate.
