A continuous-indexing bevel-gear cutting or grinding machine comprises means for moving a rotating cutter 27 in a defined path relative to a gear blank 1, gear means for rotating a supporting portion of the gear blank mounting and means for radially spacing the apex of the pitch cone 0 1 of the blank to either side of the centre O 2 of the pitch disc of an imaginary crown gear lying in a plane tangential to the pitch cone. The gear blank is mounted in a head 2 on a base 3 movable by a screw 43 along a table 4 rotated by worm gearing 5, 6, and gearing 8. The gearing 8 also rotates gears 9, 10, 12, 13, change gearing 14 and worm gearing 26, to rotate the blank 1. Two rams 29 carry wheels 27 to grind left and right flanks alternately. Each ram is carried for angular adjustment about a pivot 31 on a slide 32 adjustable laterally on a table 33 adjustable about a pivot by gearing 36, 37. The pinion blank is mounted on a head 2 1 and the gearing 14 has a pivoted slide bar 40 so that the drive may be changed from driving the gear 1 to driving the pinion 1 1 . For cutting the gear, the pitch cone apex O 1 is moved a distance " A " beyond the axis of rotation of the table 4. The off-setting results in crowned teeth on the gear. The heads 2, 2 1 are carried on arms 46, 47 pivoted at 48 so that, when cutting is complete, the gear and pinion can be swung into meshing engagement for testing.
