    • Drive shaft of a plant cutter apparatus includes an elongate main shaft portion made of a titanium alloy, and end shaft portions made of steel and integrally joined to the opposite ends of the main shaft portion. The titanium alloy has substantially the same mechanical strengths as the steel. Therefore, the titanium-alloy-made main shaft portion can secure rigidity that is normally required of the plant cutter's drive shaft, and can also reduce the weight of the drive shaft to thereby minimize unwanted sagging-induced vibrations of the drive shaft caused by the shaft's own weight.

    • An operational lever for a bush cutter includes a handle housed in a handle case, a throttle lever pivotally mounted to the handle, and a lock lever pivotally mounted to the handle. The operational lever further includes a torsional coil spring which exerts a resilient force on the lock lever. The lock lever is pivoted from an initial position to a pivoted position by an operator's palm. The throttle lever is then pivoted to a half-pivoted position by operator's fingers. When the palm is moved a small distance away from the handle case with the throttle lever held in the half-pivoted position, the lock lever is pivoted back towards the initial position by a resilient force of the spring. This causes a curved surface of a side protrusion portion of the lock lever to engage or abut on a side of a protrusion portion of the throttle lever. This arrangement is advantageous in that even when the operator takes her or his fingers off the throttle lever, the throttle lever is locked by a friction force produced between the curved surface and the side.

    • A vegetation trimming and edging device has an adjustable head that permits selective positioning between trimming and edging orientations. A shaft extends between the head and a handle. The head receives one end of the shaft. A coupling mechanism couples the head and shaft, and locks the head against rotational movement about the shaft. In particular, the coupling mechanism includes a locking structure and a bias mechanism. The bias mechanism urges the locking structure into engagement to prevent rotational movement of the head. Downward pressure applied to the head overcomes the bias, however, and disengages the locking mechanism for rotation of the head between trimming and edging modes. When the downward pressure is released, the locking mechanism is again engaged to lock the head in position for the desired operational mode.

    • A brake device disposed in the vicinity of a clutch drum has a leaf spring having a brake pad thereon which is brought into slidable contact with the clutch drum. A cam member and a compression coil spring which opposes a cam member with the leaf spring disposed therebetween are provided on a free end of the leaf spring. The cam member is rotated by a rotatable shaft together with a pinion gear which meshes with a rack formed on a stand. When a trimmer is placed on the ground, the stand is moved upwardly and the brake pad is brought into the braking position where the brake pad slidably contacts with the clutch drum. This braking position is released when an operation lever is operated by an operator.
