    • An actuator for power door locks having a bi-directional spring holder assembly. The assembly has a substantially cylindrical housing having a projection formed on a rim of its cylindrical wall. The projection is provided with first and second abutments facing in opposite directions along the circumference of the rim. A spring is mounted around a shaft which passes through a longitudinal axis of the housing. A first, internal spring end is engaged to the shaft while a second, external spring end projects radially outward of the cylindrical wall. The assembly also includes a spring cover provided with a cover abutment which similarly projects radially outward of the cylindrical wall. When the holder assembly is assembled, the spring is coiled and the cover abutment pushes against the projection's first abutment while the external spring end pushes against the second abutment. The actuator housing is provided with a wall member, one side of which forms a stop for the cover abutment, while the other side serves as a stop for the external spring end. When the gear train is driven, one of the cover abutment and the external spring end abut a corresponding stop, and the entire housing rotates with the output lever, causing the spring to coil. The coiled spring then provides a restoring force, returning the output lever to the neutral position.

    • A method for operating a hydraulic closure system for a motor vehicle includes automatic opening and closing, as well as manual closing, of a closure pivotally mounted to an opening frame defining a closure opening in the motor vehicle. The system used in the method includes at least one hydraulic actuator assembly attached at opposite ends thereof to the closure and the opening frame, respectively. A motorized hydraulic pump inputs energy to the actuator to move the closure from the opened position to the closed position, and a biased energy storage system inputs energy to the actuator to move the closure from the closed position to the opened position. In a preferred embodiment, the pump is activated by relatively slow manually generated movement of the closure from the opened position toward the closed position. Also, an obstacle detection mechanism detects obstacles interfering with closing of the closure based on monitored pressure in the system. A level detection and compensation feature adjusts the amount of energy stored in the biased energy storage system for opening the closure based on the detected inclination or declination of the vehicle so that the amount of energy stored is commensurate with the amount required to open the closure.

    • The present invention is a Bowden wire installation comprising a Bowden wire assembly including an elongated flexible tube having opposite ends. A cable is slidably mounted in the flexible tube and has opposite end portions which extend outwardly from respective opposite ends of the flexible tube. Spaced movable members are connected to the opposite end portions of the cable. Spaced anchor members are connected to opposite ends of the flexible tube. The child's seat belt assembly is constructed and arranged to automatically accommodate any particular child within a nominal size range between a 20-pound child and a 60-pound child without the straight portions having any appreciable forwardly and upwardly extent even for a 60-pound child or any appreciable ear interference even for a 20-pound child. The child's seat belt assembly is constructed and arranged to accomplish the aforesaid automatic accommodation by restricting the straight portions to extend forwardly from the support surface automatically from progressively lower levels at progressively greater angles to the horizontal as the particular child held in the restraint condition of the child's seat belt assembly is of progressively diminishing size within the range.

    • A method of making an interior panel of a vehicle door having an exterior surface which is to face toward the interior of the vehicle when installed therein. The method includes the steps of heating a laminate sheet comprising (1) an outer layer of vinyl sheet and (2) a layer of relatively soft foamed material bonded thereto and vacuum forming the heated laminate sheet in a vacuum mold component oriented so that an arm rest portion of the laminate sheet is the vinyl sheet surface thereof engaged with the mold surface arm rest portion. Next, a preformed pad of foamed elastomeric material having a density in the range of 30 to 45 pounds per cubic foot is mounted on the opposite surface of the arm rest portion of the heated laminate sheet. Thereafter a foamable polyurethane material embedded within a reinforcing mat is heated and cured while all of the mold components to form a panel which includes (1) a substrate defining the opposite surface thereof, (2) an upwardly facing arm rest portion defined on its exterior surface by the vinyl sheet and backed up therebelow by the layer of relatively soft foamed material and the pad of foamed elastomeric material.
