    • An adjustable resilient blade support for use in the forming section of a papermaking machine. The blade support is adjustable, both to allow the attached blade to be moved from a position where it is out of contact to a position where it is pressed into contact with the adjacent forming fabric, and to permit adjustment of the blade orientation relative to the surface of the forming fabric. The blade support is also resilient, and thus allows the blade to respond to transient localized changes in the path of the forming fabric with which it is in contact. The adjustable resilient blade support of this invention is thus of use in an open surface forming section, and also is of use in forming sections in which two forming fabrics are used.

    • An integrated cutter for preparing the edges of a fabric for seaming includes a hooked needle which oscillates vertically in a guide bushing located close to the plane of the fabric between a retracted position where the head of the needle is not exposed and an extended position in which the needle penetrates the fabric. The needle head is shaped so that when it moves upwardly it pushes between a pair of yarns in one direction until the hook is above a yarn in the other direction. The needle hook includes a transverse groove shaped so that when it moves downwardly it captures this yarn. The needle is a close fit within the guide bushing, to ensure cooperation between cutting edges at the lateral ends of the transverse groove and at the periphery of the hole at the top end of the guide bushing around the needle, so that a short length of the trapped yarn is severed cleanly as the cooperating cutting edges at each side of the hook and at the top end of the guide bushing pass each other when the needle moves downwardly. A carrier moves the device laterally a preset distance, and the cycle is repeated to cut another section of yarn. Since the integrated cutter of this invention does not rely on friction within the fabric to hold the yarn as it is cut, distortion of the adjacent area of the fabric is minimised.

    • A composite forming fabric for a papermaking machine woven according to a repeating fabric weave pattern is provided. The fabric includes a paper side (PS) layer having a PS surface, with the PS layer including PS warps and PS wefts interwoven in a first repeating pattern, and a machine side (MS) layer having a MS surface, with the MS layer including interwoven MS warps and MS wefts. A plurality of pairs of binder weft yarns each including first and second binder weft yarns that are interwoven with the PS warps and the MS warps to bind the PS and MS layers together in the composite forming fabric. In each pattern repeat of the fabric weave pattern at least three of the MS warps pass under each MS weft, where said at least three of the MS warps are co-located adjacent to one another with a further one of the MS warps separating a first of the at least three warps from the others of said at least three warps, and each of the MS warps interlaces with at least two non-adjacent ones of the MS wefts.
