    • An oil pan for an internal combustion engine having an engine lubrication system. The oil pan comprises a shallow bottom section and a sump section. A guide plate is secured at an inner surface to which a crankshaft splashes lubrication oil carried into the shallow bottom section. The guide plate having an inclined and a guide parts extends generally along the axis of the crankshaft and extends generally parallel with a horizontal plane. The inclined part which gradually becomes high in level in the direction toward the sump is continuously connected to the inclined part to be formed in a generally arcuate shape. Therefore, the splashed oil at the inner surface cannot over the guide plate, and the oil is positively returned into the sump section by the guide plate. Accordingly, lubrication in this engine is smoothly carried out without causing a lack of the oil in the sump section.

    • An optical attenuator which provides almost the same degree of attenuation even when the difference in wavelength of two different kinds of input optical signals is small. Another optical attenuator is provided with a dopant concentration in a technically realizable range which increases the difference in optical attenuation of two different kinds of input optical signals. Almost the same degree of attenuation may be obtained even when the difference between wavelengths is small by canceling the wavelength dependency of attenuation of the dopant by raising the refractive index of an axially central portion of the core as compared to that of the peripheral portion of the core and by taking into account the type and area of the dopant and the ratio of the difference &Dgr;2 between the refractive indexes of the cladding and the axial portion of the core and the difference &Dgr;1 between the refractive index of the cladding and the refractive index of the peripheral portion, i.e., &Dgr;1/&Dgr;2. On the other hand, the difference of attenuation is increased while suppressing the concentration of dopant to the realizable range.

    • An Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) modulating circuit includes an oscillation circuit generating a pulse oscillation having a given frequency. A frequency divider is provided having a binary counter unit and having at least an input terminal, an output terminal and a reset terminal. The frequency divider is active and inactive when the reset terminal thereof is applied with low and high levels of a transmission signal wave, respectively, and divides the pulse oscillation while the frequency divider is active. The transmission signal wave is modulated together with a carrier frequency which is identical to the divided frequency.
