    • A folding device for holding and folding an IOL and adapted to allow a surgeon to select between loading the IOL into a removably attached IOL injector and between holding the IOL in a folded state for removal with a separate instrument. The folding device includes a pair of opposing sides, each having an upper surface. A plurality of retaining brackets extend upwardly from the upper surfaces of each side. The brackets are adapted for receiving and removably retaining the IOL injector. A hinge couples the sides together along a fold axis and allows the sides to retain the IOL therebetween. The hinge allows the sides to fold together from a planer position about a first fold direction when using the separate instrument and towards each other about a second fold direction when using the IOL injector. This allows the surgeon to select between attaching the IOL injector to the retaining brackets such that when the sides are folded about the second fold direction, the IOL is released from the sides and loaded into the load chamber and between folding the sides about the first fold direction such that the IOL is folded and maintained in a folded state.

    • A surgical stapler having a supporting frame, replaceable staple cartridge, an anvil, a mechanism for approximating the cartridge relative to the anvil, and a mechanism for firing the device so as to crimp the staples against the anvil in a manner to enable the surgeon to substantially simultaneously place one or more rows of surgical staples in organs or tissue. The device, while at all times permitting approximation of the cartridge relative to the anvil, provides a novel lockout feature for positively preventing retiring if the staple cartridge is spent. In this way, unlike the prior art devices, the device of the present invention can be used as a clamping mechanism even after the staples have been fired.

    • A method of making a hemostatic plug for placement at a site where hemostatic treatment is indicated. The method comprises rolling a sheet of a hemostatic material a plurality of turns onto a generally cylindrical forming tool to thereby produce a rolled hemostatic plug having an opening therethrough along its longitudinal axis. In addition to employing one sheet of hemostatic material having a single density to form a plug, two sheets of hemostatic material having different densities can be rolled in tandem to each other on the forming tool, with one sheet overlapping an exposed wedge portion of the other sheet. The plugs thus formed can be longitudinally compressed if subsequent longitudinal expansion is desired. A typical placement site for which the plug is preferably employed is a puncture wound wherein an entry penetration of an artery and a tissue channel leading thereto are present.
