    • A spectrum analyzer determines the light emission characteristics of an authentication mark that is invisible when illuminated with visible light but is visible when illuminated with IR light. The spectrum analyzer includes an IR light source, a mirror positioned to deflect light from the IR light source in a direction that is substantially perpendicular to a surface of the authentication mark, a first lens for collimating light that is emitted by the authentication mark in response to an illumination by the light from the IR light source, an optical element comprising a prism or a hologram for generating a spectrum from the collimated light, a second lens for imaging the spectrum, an IR light blocking filter, a detector positioned to receive light components of the spectrum after the spectrum has been imaged by the second lens and filtered by the IR light blocking filter, and a control unit connected to the detector and programmed to read the authentication mark based on intensities of the light components received by the detector.

    • A scanning keratometer for the rapid and accurate measurement and mapping of the corneal curvature is disclosed. The keratometer has a monochromatic light source directing light to a scanner, preferably controlled by a microcomputer. The scanner directs the light to a holographic element functioning as a lens which in turn focuses the light to a fixed focal point forward of the holographic element independent of the area of the holographic element being illuminated. The subject's eye is position with respect to the fixed focal point so that a part of the light incident to the eye is reflected from the surface thereof again passing through the holographic element, to be deflected from the main optical axis of the system to a suitable area sensor. Assuming the subject's eye is properly positioned and the cornea surface matches the shape of an ideal cornea, the light incident to the cornea will be reflected in the same direction as the incident light, ultimately impinging on the center of the sensor. If, on the other hand, the local area of the cornea being illuminated is not matching, the light reflected from the cornea will be at an angle with respect to the incident light, ultimately impinging on the sensor at a position dependent upon the shape of the local area of the cornea then being illuminated. Various methods of eye positioning, scanning and other aspects of the system are disclosed.

    • A product authentication system and method employs a unique mark that is simple and cost-effective to apply and read, but provides several layers of protection, including anti-counterfeit and anti-diversion, against counterfeiters. The unique mark includes a bar code that is printed in invisible ink comprising a UV or near-IR ink and an IR mark. The first layer of protection is invisibility. The second layer of protection is the bar code itself. The third layer of protection is the presence of the IR mark in the unique mark. The fourth layer of protection is the IR emitting characteristics of the IR mark.

    • Authenticating an object includes marking the object with a mark containing at least two markers wherein each marker fluoresces when illuminated with one of UV and IR, but does not fluoresce when illuminated with visible light. The marking may be in the form of a bar code containing a number or alphanumeric codes uniquely identifying the object to be marked with the particular mixture of markers used. A spectral analysis of the marking ink or the code is used to define spectral peaks for use as part of the authentication signature. The authentication signature may be defined using the identified peaks and logical conditions imposed upon them such as minimum threshold amplitude values and ratio values among peaks. Apparatus includes a device for storing data associating the code data printed on the object, the identification of the marking ink, the authentication signature (including the logical constraints) and other data such as the position of the marking on the object, the owner of the object and date of marking.

    • A public or private electric charging station or device for an electric vehicle. A user can approach an outlet station in an electric car, plug the car into the station similar to using a gasoline pump, present a credit card to the system, and be provided with either standard line voltage of sufficient wattage to charge the battery of an electric or hybrid vehicle. After the vehicle is charged, the credit card debited for the correct amount for the power dispensed, or other arrangements to pay can be accommodated such as debiting a prepaid account. Optionally, the user can also inject (100) reverse-flow power back into the grid for credit and receive credit for the power injected. Several users can share the same station, and can identify themselves by key access, card swipe, biometrically, or by a card containing an RFID chip that contains their identity.
