    • Some embodiments of the invention are directed to a data storage system that includes a disk and solid-state non-volatile memory (NVM). During a power failure, the data storage system may use back EMF (BEMF) voltage from the spindle motor of the disk to park the heads of the disk and/or store data in the NVM. In one embodiment, a demand regulation circuit regulates loads that use voltage generated from the BEMF. The demand regulation circuit may be used to selectively cause a controller to adjust the rate of programming to the NVM in order to reduce the load. For example, the demand regulation circuit may assert a throttle signal to the controller upon detecting that the voltage generated from the BEMF is below a certain threshold. Programming rate may be throttled, programming cycles may be staggered, and/or programming time may be lengthened. Throttling may enable the use of smaller circuitry.

    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, a head actuated radially over the disk, and a spindle motor for rotating the disk, the spindle motor comprising a plurality of windings and a rotor rotatable at a variable spin rate, wherein the rotor generates a back EMF (BEMF) voltage across the windings proportional to the spin rate of the rotor. A plurality of switching elements are coupled to the windings, and switch control logic generates switch control signals applied to the switching elements for commutating the spindle motor during normal operation and for generating an internal supply voltage from the BEMF during a spin down mode, the internal supply voltage for parking the head. A programmable signal generator generates a periodic signal, the periodic signal for periodically grounding the windings during the spin down mode in order to boost the internal supply voltage, wherein grounding the windings applies a braking torque to the spindle motor. A programmable register is provided for storing a digital value for adjusting a frequency characteristic of the periodic signal, thereby enhancing power management.

    • Disclosed is a method in a disk drive that allows the functionality of a single high-resolution DAC to be replicated with a pair of lower-resolution DACs that are operated in a unique manner that provides monotonic behavior and reduces both differential and integral non-linearity. The two lower-resolution DACs take up substantially less space that one higher-resolution DAC when implemented in a semiconductor die. The method combines coarse values from one DAC with fine values from the other DAC to form a combined analog output signal within operational segments that collectively span a range of N-bit demands. The method operates such the operational segments overlap one another by 50 percent, with an endpoint of each operational segment ending near a center of an overlapped operational segment. The method's overlapping relationship tends to cause the combined analog output voltage to vary monotonically, by maintaining the X-bit command and only varying the Y-bit command whenever possible for small changes in the combined analog output signal.

    • A device for retrieving and disposing of pet feces is provided which includes a bag formed of flexible sheet material having an open end and a closed end. A tray having a bottom panel is attached to the closed end of the bag. The panel has a central score line, which forms a hinge line and side walls hingedly connected to each side of the panel on opposite sides of the score line. The side walls are pivotable, from a transportation and storage position folded against the bottom panel, to a use position normal to the panel. Thus the tray can be manipulated manually from within the bag to retrieve pet feces, and the bag subsequently inverted thereover to enclose the tray and the feces therein.

    • A line printer having a hammerbank with hammers that are held by a permanent magnet and released by electrically driven coils. The temperature of the coils is determined by the relative resistance of the coils to provide an output equivalent to the temperature of said coils. The resistance is determined as a function of the current through the coils or voltage of the coils which is converted from an analog to a digital value. The attendant method of determining temperature of the coils in the hammerbank is by comparing a pre-established current or voltage value based upon a pre-established temperature of the coil with the current passing through the coil during operation of the hammerbank. The comparison of the current passing through the coil during operation with the pre-established current is provided to a controller for controlling the printer in response to the current differential between the currents which is in turn a function of the operating temperature.
