    • A method is disclosed for combining seismic data sets. This method has application in merging data sets of different vintages, merging data sets collected using different acquisition technologies, and merging data sets acquired using different types of sensors, for example merging hydrophone and geophone measurements in ocean bottom seismic data. In one embodiment, a desired data trace is to be determined from a set of measured data traces, and the following steps are applied: (a) model filters are constructed which express the deterministic relationship between the desired data trace and each available measured trace that depends on the desired data trace; (b) the noise properties associated with each measured data trace are determined; (c) a sufficient statistic for the desired data trace is formed by application of an appropriate filter to each measured trace and summing the filter outputs; (d) the sufficient statistic is further processed by a single-input single-output estimator to construct an estimate of the desired data trace from the sufficient statistic.

    • The present invention is a method for constructing a geologic model of a subsurface reservoir which is a composite sedimentary body (30) composed of many smaller fundamental sedimentary bodies (32). In one embodiment, the fundamental sedimentary bodies (32) within the composite body (30) are specified by the properties of the flow which built them, including the flow properties that existed at the local inlet (36) of each fundamental body (32). The statistical distribution of these local inlet properties is characterized throughout the composite sedimentary body (30) using either outline forms of some of the fundamental sedimentary bodies (32) or a well penetration which samples the composite sedimentary body (30). The geologic model is constructed by placing an appropriate statistical distribution of the fundamental sedimentary bodies (32) into the outline form of the composite sedimentary body (30) so that the grain size distribution and/or other geologic properties are specified at each point within the composite sedimentary body (30).

    • A method to determine the properties of a water-lain sediment body from a measurement of grain size distribution and deposit thickness at one location in the body is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method comprises (a) determining the flow properties at the measured location, (b) extrapolating the flow properties back to the inlet through which the depositing flow was emitted, (c) determining at least one property of the water-lain sediment throughout the sediment body by modeling the flow properties using the extrapolated flow properties at the inlet from step (b) as a boundary condition. The flow properties associated with the sediment body include flow velocity, suspended sediment volume fractions, deposition time, and flow height. The properties of the water-lain sediments include, in addition to the flow properties associated with deposition of the sediments, the thickness of the sediment body, the size of the body, the shape of the body, and the grain size distribution at each point within the body.
