    • An integrated mesopump-sensor suitable for disposition in two- and three-dimensional arrays having small dimensions is disclosed. One mesopump is formed of an electrostatically attractable flexible diaphragm disposed through cavities or pumping chambers formed between two opposing electrostatically chargeable material layers. Fluid is pumped through the chambers by sequentially moving the diaphragm toward the first chargeable layer, then towards the second chargeable layer, which can pull and push the fluid through a series of chambers, and past the sensor. One group of sensors utilizes multiple and varied chemoresistive sensors which can vary in resistance differently in response to the presence of various analytes. Another group of sensors utilizes chemo-fluorescent sensors that fluoresce in the presence of particular analytes. Some mesopump-sensor systems can be manufactured using MEMS technology and can be coupled to controllers for sequencing the pumps and analyzing sensor outputs using methods including Principle Component Analysis.

    • An electrostatic actuator array having at least one cell, in which the individual cells share a common electrode. Each cell includes first and second electrodes separated by a distance and having a moveable diaphragm mounted there between for conducting a voltage potential thereto. One of the pair is movable with respect to the other, and the pair are positioned to move upon application of a voltage potential thereto by electrodes attached thereto. A voltage potential producing an alternate polarity field generated from a single DC power supply is selectively provided to the electrodes to cause the movement. The preferred signals from the power supply are uni-polar square wave signals, preferably deriving the alternate polarity field from a DC current having time allocation of signals to present alternating fields to each actuator. The individual cells are configured in an actuator array wherein some cells operate out of phase with adjoining cells. The plurality of actuation cells equals n, having 2n electrodes, where n is an integer of at least 2. A preferred actuator array comprises n actuation cells working out of phase with 2n electrodes driven with n+1 unipolar signals.

    • A mesovalve having a diaphragm situated between a first chamber and a second chamber. There may be an inlet and an outlet in the first chamber. The diaphragm may provide an orifice between the first and second chambers. There may be a first electrode on the diaphragm and a second electrode on an inside surface of the second chamber. The diaphragm may have first and second positions, or numerous variable positions. Applying a voltage across the electrodes may electrostatically move the diaphragm to the second position during which the outlet is at least partially opened for fluid communication with the inlet, the orifice is closed and the diaphragm is stopped in the second position by a cushioning fluid pressure in the second cavity to prevent pull-in. Removing the voltage from the electrodes may let the diaphragm return to the first position, open the orifice and close the outlet.
