    • An optical device (44) has a holding frame (446) that holds a liquid crystal panel (441) as an optical modulator and has an opening (446C) at a part corresponding to an image formation area of the liquid crystal panel (441), and a panel fixing plate (447) disposed between the holding frame (446) and a cross dichroic prism (444). The panel fixing plate (447) is made of a component having a thermal expansion coefficient lying midway between the thermal expansion coefficients of the holding frame (446) and the cross dichroic prism (444). The liquid crystal panel (441) is fixed on a side of the cross dichroic prism (444) through the holding frame (446) and the panel fixing plate (447). Accordingly, a thermal stress generated on the boundaries between the panel fixing plate (447), and the holding frame (446) and the cross dichroic prism (444) are reduced, thereby preventing the position shift of the liquid crystal panel (441).

    • A projector prevents deterioration in optical characteristics of liquid crystal panels caused by heat generated by polarizers, and sticking of dirt onto the light-outgoing surface of the liquid crystal panels. Polarizers are disposed adjacent to the light-outgoing surfaces of liquid crystal panels, while other polarizers are disposed adjacent to the light-incoming surfaces of the liquid crystal panels. The liquid crystal panels and the two polarizers disposed adjacent to the light-incoming and light-outgoing surface of their corresponding liquid crystal panels, are supported by dust protection members. The area between the light-incoming surface of each liquid crystal panel and its associated polarizer disposed adjacent to the light-incoming surface, and the area between the light-outgoing surface of each liquid crystal panel and its associated polarizer disposed adjacent to the light-outgoing surface thereof are cut off from the outside by the dust protection member associated thereto. By virtue of this structure, it is possible to prevent deterioration in the optical characteristics of each liquid crystal panel, and to prevent dirt from sticking onto the light-outgoing surface of each light valve. Therefore, a high quality image with excellent contrast can be projected.

    • The invention provides a light source device which can positively arrange a light source lamp at a predetermined position on an optical axis. To this end, the invention provides an alignment reference surface on a reflector to which the light source lamp is attached. More specifically, a light source device of the invention comprises a light source lamp, and a reflector for reflecting light emitted from the light source lamp, the light source lamp being attached to the reflector, wherein an alignment reference surface for aligning and mounting the light source lamp is formed on the reflector. According to the invention, the light source device can be assembled by mounting the light source lamp apart from the alignment reference surface by a predetermined distance with respect to, for example, the X-axis, Y-axis, and Z-axis, respectively. That is, in mounting the light source lamp to the reflector, it is possible to assemble the light source device without fine adjustment of the mounting position of the light source lamp while the light source lamp is lit.

A projection display device includes a head body having a surface for mounting a light modulator such as a liquid crystal light valve or the like thereon, and an air inlet for cooling the light modulator provided on the surface, the air inlet is formed to be enlarged on a side opposite to the spiral direction of cooling air sucked by an intake fan arranged below the air inlet and blown out.     • A projection display device that promotes size reduction thereof, and that allows an optical system including optical modulation devices to be equitably and efficiently cooled. The projection display device includes a head body having an optical modulation device, a color synthesizing optical system, and a projection lens mounted thereon, a fan disposed in the head body, and a fan frame mounted on a prism bearing face at a plurality of points so as to hold the fan. The fan frame has a face that faces the prism bearing face and is shaped substantially like a quadrangle in outline, and one of the two diagonal lines of the quadrangle extends along the plane orthogonal to the prism bearing face. This makes it possible to mount the fan frame close to the projection lens side, and to thereby promote size reduction.
