    • A flexible-bandwith radio is provided. Briefly, the radio is equipped with a multiplicity of modulator and demodulator units arranged to communicate on a multiplicity of discrete frequency bands. There is no need for the individual frequency bands to be contiguous. As a result, the radio is able to simultaneously supporting a multiplicity of band-limited radio channels. The radio is further equipped with a channel combiner unit and a channel divider unit to combine the individual channels to form a high-capacity aggregate channel. The aggregate channel is then provided to the user, or to a user application. In a first embodiment, the radio utilizes a multiplicity of discrete modulator, demodulator, combiner, and divider units. In a second embodiment, the radio utilizes a suitably-programmed digital signal processor to perform the equivalent modulator, demodulator, combiner, and divider functions.

    • A communication system performs adaptive scheduling by considering present and past reported CQI values and other indications of channel conditions in scheduling a Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) and then executing a ‘dithering’ function in order to effectuate an MCS that is intermediate between adjacent discrete MCSs. In one embodiment, the communication system determines a first MCS based on a channel quality metric received from a mobile station (MS) and then transmits data utilizing the first MCS. The communication system assigns weights to each of the first MCS and a second MCS based on whether the transmitted data is acknowledged and, based on the assigned weights, selects one of the first and second MCSs for a subsequent transmission of data to the MS. The communication system also may assign weights to each of a first and second MCS based on a transition between a MIMO-A and a MIMO-B transmission scheme.

    • A chalk line is marked by attaching two hooks to a nail, and then extending a string a length from the nail. The hooks are attached to an apparatus that has multiple springs, such that there is a string attached to the rear of the apparatus while the hooks are attached to the front of the apparatus. When the string has been extended the desired length, the user then snaps the line to make a chalk line. Then, the pull on the string is released by the user, causing the two hooks to separate. When the two hooks separate, their connection to the nail is broken. The hooks and the apparatus associated with the hooks then is free to be reeled back to the user. The user does not have to return to the nail to remove the hooks and the associated apparatus.

    • Methods and apparatus for facilitating mobility of the mobile stations in a wireless local area network (WLAN) allows uninterrupted communications as the mobile station moves. The method includes associating (501) a MNIP address (410) with the mobile station; establishing (502) a communications link between the mobile station and a first WLAN AP (109) in a first subnet (117) and associating (503) a first WLAN IP (420) address with the mobile station. Then using (505) the first WLAN IP address for an application that benefits from a persistent connection. Further included is establishing (507) a second communications link between the mobile station and a second WLAN AP 111 in a second subnet (119). When the mobile station is using the application, continuing to use the first WLAN IP address for communicating with the second subnet; and requesting (517) a second WLAN IP address in the second subnet when the persistent connection is no longer needed.

    • A controller (120), in response to receiving a request for a group call (201) targeting a group (101), allocates at least one power adjustment channel to the group call (202) and sends identification of the at least one power adjustment channel to at least some of the subscriber units in the group (203). Using the at least one power adjustment channel, the controller also sends unique power adjustment information to each of the at least some subscriber units (204). Unique power adjustment channel access information is also sent to the subscriber units so that each subscriber unit can receive its own unique power adjustment information (503) and adjust its inbound transmission power (504) in response. In this manner, efficient reverse power control is provided for multiple subscriber units thereby facilitating group calls in CDMA systems.
