    • A method enables a controller to align printheads in a printer. The method includes identifying a first cross-process position for each printhead in a plurality of printheads in a printer with reference to image data of a test pattern printed by the plurality of printheads on a media substrate, identifying a second cross-process position for each printhead in the plurality of printheads, calculating a printhead cross-process position error between the identified first cross-process position and the identified second cross-process position for each printhead, comparing a maximum printhead cross-process position error to a predetermined threshold, and operating a plurality of actuators with reference to the calculated printhead cross-process position errors to reposition the printheads in the plurality of printheads in response to the maximum printhead cross-process position error being equal to or less than the predetermined threshold.

    • A modular printing device has been developed that may be configured with different numbers of ink colors and ink types and with a different cross-process direction print resolution for each ink color and ink type. The modular printing device configurable to print with multiple combinations of ink colors and ink types at different print resolutions includes a plurality of printhead arrays, each printhead array being configured to eject ink onto an image receiving surface at a first print resolution in a cross-process direction, a plurality of ink supplies, each ink supply being configured to store ink and to provide ink to one printhead array in the plurality of printhead arrays, and a controller configured to operate the plurality of printhead arrays at one of at least two combinations of ink colors and ink types, each combination identifying an ink color or an ink type to be ejected by each printhead array and the controller operating the printhead arrays ejecting a same ink color or a same ink type at a print resolution in the cross-process direction corresponding to the number of printhead arrays ejecting the same ink color or the same ink type.

    • Operation of a developer so as to achieve reduced scavenging and reduced direct contamination when using a hybrid developer. A hybrid developer is operated in three modes. The first mode is normal operation in which the developer operates as in the prior art. The second mode is an unloaded standby mode wherein toner is not on the developer's donor roll and wherein the developer's bias potentials are selected to reduce scavenging. The third mode is a loaded standby mode wherein toner is on the developer's donor roll and wherein the developer's bias potentials are selected to reduce direct contamination.

    • An electrophotographic reproduction machine including an image bearing member, latent image devices for forming on the image bearing member electrostatic latent images having a first relative polarity, and a hybrid development unit for applying to the latent images correct-sign toner particles having a second polarity relatively opposite to the first polarity. A detecting apparatus adjacent the image bearing member for sensing toner particles developed into non-image regions. The development unit includes a first biasing means including a DC power supply for biasing a magnetic roll mounted within the housing of the hybrid development unit. A second biasing means includes a second DC power for biasing a donor roll mounted which forms a toner transfer nip with the magnetic roll. The DC power supplies is adjusted so that "wrong sign" toner of said first polarity are attracted to the donor roll from the magnetic brush within the housing of the hybrid development unit. An electrostatic field is produced between the image bearing member and the donor roll having a wrong-sign toner thereon. The wrong sign toner is attracted to the image bearing member; and a sensor senses wrong-sign toner on said image bearing member.

    • A color printing machine with a plurality of toner dispensers has a fewer number of toner dispenser members and control mechanisms than toner dispensers. This is accomplished by locating the toner dispensers in close proximity to one another so that a single toner dispenser member can extend between the plurality of toner dispensers.
