    • A data storage subsystem dynamically maps a virtual data storage device image presented to associated processors to physical data storage devices used to implement the data storage subsystem. Multiple destage memory elements are concurrently active to increase an aggregate destage data transfer rate and to allow data to be stored on various memory elements appropriate to the type of data contained in each stored virtual object. An open logical cylinder list is used to maintain data integrity among multiple open destage memory elements. Memory elements are also selected to function as archive memory. The data storage subsystem includes a plurality of data storage elements configured into at least two redundancy groups, each redundancy group including n+m of the data storage elements, and a cache memory connected to the redundancy groups and a host processor interface. The data storage subsystem stores data indicative of the amount of available memory space on each of the open logical cylinders and little used data records are migrated or transferred from other memory elements to the archive memory elements to maintain sufficient available memory space.

    • A peripheral device subsystem enables its peripheral devices to operate asynchronously with respect to attaches hosts through the use of managed buffers, new multiple data transfer modes, control and error recovery operations. In a preferred first or buffer mode of operation, all data of each record being transferred can be resident in a buffer before transfer to either a host or device. For a host to device write transfer, receipt of such a record by the buffer results in the subsystem signaling to the host a completion of a transfer to an addressed device even though the device has received none or only part of the data. In a second or tape write mode, recording data in a peripheral device, such as a tape recorder, completion of recording is not signaled until after the buffer has transferred the data to the recorder. In the event allocatable buffer space is insufficient to enable operations in the first or second modes, the subsystem automatically switches to a tape synchronous or third mode of data transfer in which data signals are simultaneously transferred between the buffer and the host and peripheral device. A host SYNCHRONIZE command synchronizes buffer operations to host operations. Data to be recorded in a peripheral device and resident in the buffer can be retrieved by a host via a READ BUFFER command. Errors in the subsystem are reported even when delayed after completion of host operations. Additional mode controls are also disclosed.

    • A system and method for configuring expandable buses wherein a host supports a plurality of expandable buses are provided. A plurality of devices are arranged to form a plurality of groups. Each group forms a chain of devices on an expandable bus. Each chain includes an input connector. The chains are configured such that connecting an expandable bus of the host to the input connector for a particular chain causes that particular chain to be directly connected to that particular expandable bus of the host. The absence of connecting any expandable bus of the host to the input connector for a particular chain causes that particular chain to be directly connected to a different chain so as to be indirectly connected to one of the expandable buses of the host. In another embodiment, the connections to an expandible bus of the host must be consistent with a predetermined connection logic.

    • A customer making a credit card transaction inserts their smart card into a card reader attached to the merchant's system. The card reader activates the customer's card and passes certain merchant information. The merchant's system then requests a “billing digest” from the customer's card. The billing digest is returned to the merchant's card reader that forwards it (and the transaction information which includes customer information and merchant information) to the corresponding credit card issuer, which maintains the customer's credit card account. In one embodiment, the customer information and the merchant information are encrypted. Upon receiving the billing digest, transaction information is decrypted if necessary and the credit card issuer looks up the customer's master key using the customer's account number. The credit card issuer then uses the transaction information to re-compute the billing digest (an authentication billing digest) and compares this new value with the billing digest submitted by the merchant. If authentic, the billing digest and authentication billing digest values are equivalent, then funds are transferred and an acceptance notification is returned to the merchant. If not authentic, a denial notification is returned to the merchant. Security is further enhanced by utilizing a unique reference for each transaction in the unique customer information used for creating the billing digest.
