    • Disclosed are an apparatus for and a method of managing the location of a packet call in the wireless environment of a wireless packet data system. A dormant-state mobile station management is carried out by registering call information in a dormant state database in response to an initial request for a packet data service, registering dormant state information in a pointer lookup table, and updating location information of a mobile station entering a dormant state, based on the dormant state information, in response to a message received from the mobile station, or resuming the packet data service. In accordance with the invention, it is possible to reduce the connection time and load required to resume a call establishment associated with the mobile station maintained in a dormant state.

    • There is provided a data transmitting method in a CDMA system. In the CDMA system, a control hold state and an active state are set for data transmission between a mobile station and a base station. The control hold state is entered to transmit a control signal on a dedicated control channel and the active state is divided into a low rate transmission substate for transmitting a small amount of data on the dedicated control channel or/and a fundamental channel and a high rate transmission substate for transmitting a large amount of data on a supplemental channel and on at least one of the dedicated control channel and the fundamental channel. When a large amount of user data is generated in the mobile station, the mobile station generates a supplemental channel request message including supplemental channel request information needed to transit from the control hold state to the high rate transmission substate without interposition of the low rate transmission substate and state transition information needed to transit from the control hold state to the active state, and transmits the supplemental channel request message to the base station.

Upon detecting handoff based on current air information received, an interface module reports a change in interface to a new air interface to an upper layer, and manages the mobile terminal such that traffic is transmitted to the new air interface. Upon receiving information on the new air interface from the interface module, a service module determines a bandwidth of the new air interface, generates a message based on the determined bandwidth, and transmits the generated message.

    • An apparatus and method for multiplexing voice packets to an ATM cell in an ATM network. Voice packets received from voice users to which voice calls have been connected are stored in a queue. An output rate controller determines a maximum number of ATM cells that can be transmitted during a predetermined control period according to information about the voice calls. When a voice packet is received at the queue, or when a predetermined operation period is reached, the output rate controller compares a number of ATM cells transmitted during the control period with the maximum number of ATM cells. If the number of transmitted ATM cells is less than the maximum number of ATM cells, the output rate controller requests a multiplexer to output an ATM cell. Then the multiplexer forms an ATM cell from stored voice packets by multiplexing.

    • Disclosed is a method for handing-off a mobile station receiving packet data over a second channel from a first base station system (BSS) to a second BSS by a base station controller (BSC) in a system in which the mobile station communicates with the first BSS and the second BSS adjacent to the first BSS through a first channel for transmitting a control message, and the mobile station communicates with the first BSS through the second channel for transmitting the packet data. In the method, the mobile station measures receiving strengths of pilot channels transmitted from the first BSS and the second BSS, and transmits the measured receiving strengths to the BSC through the first BSS and the second BSS. The first and second BSSs each calculate available transmission power allocable to the second channel and transmits the calculated available transmission power to the BSC. The BSC calculates a sum of the available transmission power and the measured receiving strength of the pilot channel from the first BSS and a sum of the available transmission power and the measured receiving strength of the pilot channel from the second BSS. The BSC transmits a handoff indication message to the second BSS, when the sum of the available transmission power and the measured receiving strength of the pilot channel from the second BSS is higher than the sum of the available transmission power and the measured receiving strength of the pilot channel from the first BSS.
