X and Y each independently represent an alkyl group, a halogen atom, an alkoxy group, or an alkylthio group. The liquid crystal device, reflection display material, and light modulating material of the invention contain the liquid crystal composition.

The smectic liquid crystal composition comprises at least, a dichroic dye, a dual-frequency switchable nematic liquid crystal and a smectic liquid crystal. The dielectric anisotropy of the composition changes from a positive value to a negative value with increasing a frequency of a field applied to the composition. A novel liquid crystal device is also disclosed. The device comprises a pair of electrodes of which at least one is a transparent electrode, and a layer between the pair of electrodes comprising the smectic liquid crystal composition.
