    • An overhang type electromagnetic clutch used for selectively connecting the rotation of an internal combustion engine to a compressor for an air conditioning system for an automobile. The clutch is provided with a rotor having a sliding surface axially spaced from an outer end of a pulley arranged around the rotor. A bit, which initially is in contact with the sliding surface at a location spaced from the axis of the rotation of the rotor, is radially moved while the rotor is rotated, so that radially spaced apart tool marks eccentric to the axis of the rotation of rotor and having a gradually increased radius are formed on the entire region of the sliding surface. An increased engagement of the sliding surface with an armature is obtained due to the provision of engagements in the circumferential direction. A bit, which initially is in contact with the sliding surface at a location corresponding to the axis of the rotation of the rotor may be first moved radially outward while the rotor is rotated, so that radially spaced apart first tool marks concentric to the axis of the rotation of rotor and having a gradually increased radius are formed on the entire region of the sliding surface. The bit is then moved radially inward so that radially spaced apart second tool marks concentric to the axis of the rotation of rotor and having a gradually decreased radius are formed on the entire region of the sliding surface. As a result, the first and second tool mark cross and provide an engagement in the circumferential direction.

    • A improvement in the process for isolating and recovering meta- and para-cresols from crude cresol-containing compositions composed of cresol components, unreacted cymene components and high-boiling by-products, by distillation in a distillation zone, the characteristic features residing in that:(i) the unreacted cymene components content in the crude cresol-containing composition is adjusted to 5-25% by weight of said composition after the adjustment, and the water content of said composition is adjusted to become 0.17-1.5 times by weight of the total cresol-components present in the composition, before the crude cresol-containing composition is supplied to the distillation zone, and also in that(ii) in said distillation zone, the cresol component containing ortho-cresol at a higher concentration than that in the supplied crude cresol-containing composition is distilled off as an azeotropic mixture with the unreacted cymene components and water, whereby the cresol component composed of more condensed meta- and para-cresols being isolated and recovered.

    • Provided is a point-to-multipoint optical communication system capable of extending a transmission distance between a subscriber apparatus and a station apparatus without changing wavelengths of an upstream optical signal and a downstream optical signal, which are used in both of the apparatuses. The point-to-multipoint optical communication system includes, as a basic configuration thereof, an optical network for connecting one station apparatus (1) to a plurality of (n) subscriber apparatuses (4). Among m basic configurations, one station-side wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer (22), one optical fiber transmission line (30), and one subscriber-side wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer (12) are shared. The point-to-multipoint optical communication system further includes a station-side repeating unit (20) and a subscriber-side repeating unit (10) each including the one wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer (22 or 12) and m wavelength converters (21 or 11). An optical signal having a conventionally-used wavelength is used between the station apparatus (1) and the station-side repeating unit (20) and between the subscriber apparatus (4) and the subscriber-side repeating unit (10), and an extensible optical signal, on which wavelength division multiplexing has been performed, is used between the wavelength multiplexers/demultiplexers (12 and 22) via the optical fiber transmission line (30).
