摘要： Performed is conveying-error correction in accordance with the kind and the number of rollers that are actually involved in the conveying of a printing medium. Each of the rollers that are potentially involved in the conveying of the printing medium has a unique amount of eccentricity, and may affect the quality of image to be printed in a peculiar manner. To address this problem, a surface of the printing medium is divided into areas according to the number and the combination of the rollers that are actually involved in the conveying. A pattern each is printed for each of the areas thus formed while the pattern enables the detection of the conveying error. A correction value to correct the conveying error is calculated using each of the patterns. The correction values thus obtained are reflected in the conveying of the printing medium.

For this purpose, this invention detects the number of printing elements to be driven in a predetermined check area set in one scan area of the print head. If the detected value is greater than a predetermined threshold, either the number of printing elements to be driven in one scan period of the print head or one scan period from when the print head starts the printing scan until the next printing scan is started is selected and changed according to the set printing condition and the printing operation is performed accordingly.

摘要： A recording apparatus is configured to record an image on a recording medium by repeating a recording operation and a conveying operation. The recording operation is operative to apply a recording agent to the recording medium using a recording head while moving the recording head for scanning in a direction different from a predetermined direction. The recording head includes a plurality of recording elements arranged in the predetermined direction and adapted to apply the recording agent. The conveying operation is operative to convey the recording medium in a direction transverse to the scanning direction. The recording apparatus includes a recording control unit configured to perform the recording operation such that a number of the recording elements which are used to record an image on at least one of a front end portion and a rear end portion of the recording medium is reduced at a rate as compared to that of the recording elements which are used to record an image on a central portion of the recording medium, and a recording mode selecting unit configured to select a recording mode from a plurality of recording modes differing from one another in at least one of recording quality and recording time. The recording control unit changes the rate of reduction according to the recording mode selected by the recording mode selecting unit.

The fluctuation in the conveying error is reduced by the application of the correction value for eccentricity, and the influence of the excess area is made smaller before the correction value for outer diameter is acquired by averaging the conveying errors.

摘要： Mask patterns to be used for multi-pass printing make it possible to make a print with a higher quality at a higher speed. Specifically, by performing a swapping process with adjacency forbiddance, two points in the horizontal direction, or the scanning direction of a printing head, are selected in a buffer in which codes for each scan pass are set depending on printing ratios of a gradation mask. Subsequently, codes are swapped between the two points. By this swap, adjacencies between print permitting areas are eliminated in the mask pattern. As a result, when driving frequencies set for the printing head is kept constant, the scanning speed can be doubled at minimum.
