    • A multiplexing apparatus for multiplexing audio data into transport stream (TS) packets includes a first encoding section encoding the audio data by a first encoding method; a second encoding section encoding the audio data by a second encoding method, which is a variable-length encoding method and which differs from the first encoding method, for attaching a timing value indicating a timing used when audio data is decoded in units of predetermined audio data; a packetization section packetizing the audio data encoded by the first encoding section and the audio data encoded by the second encoding section into TS packets and for attaching the same ID to a plurality of packetized TS packets; a determination section determining a TS packet to be multiplexed from among the plurality of TS packets packetized by the packetization section; and a multiplexing section multiplexing the TS packet determined by the determination section.

    • Control data subsequent to an extension start code is stored in an encoding apparatus when transmitted after each header data of a video sequence layer, a GOP layer, a picture layer and a slice layer. And in transmission of the next header data, the content of the control data subsequent to the extension start code in the header data to be transmitted is compared with the content of the preceding header data of the same layer stored in the encoding apparatus. And if the result of such comparison signifies that the compared data are mutually the same, neither the extension start code nor the subsequent control data is transmitted. At the reception of each header data of the video sequence layer, the GOP layer, the picture layer and the slice layer, the control data decoded subsequently to the extension start code is stored in the decoding apparatus. And when the extension start code is not existent in the next header data to be decoded, the preceding header data of the same layer stored in the decoding apparatus is duplicated and used as the control data of the layer being currently encoded.

    • For a large capacity recording medium, a user interface having high flexibility and enriched representation is accomplished. A flag that represents whether a play item has a multiple angle structure of which the play item is reproduced with a plurality of angles is described. In addition, a flag that represents whether the beginning of each decode unit is an angle switchable point is described. In a seamless multiple angle structure, the current angle can be switched without need to increase the number of interleave units. In a nonseamless multiple angle structure, with the flag, in a predetermined region on the rear end side of each angle, the current angle is prohibited from being switched. Thus, when a play item exits from the multiple angle, discontinuity in the reproduction can be prevented. In addition, with a flag that represents whether a sub play item should be reproduced not in synchronization with a main path, the sub play item of only audio data can be used as a BGM.
