    • The invention provides for an apparatus comprising a pin connector, and a method for assembling the pin connector, where the pin connector comprises a unitary insulator and housing, and a plurality of contact holes that extend between a front and back face of the insulator to receive contacts known in the art. The insulator may also contains an intermediate PCB slot that opens from the back face of the insulator and receives a PCB inserted therein. The unitary housing has a front and back end, where the back end receives the insulator from the front face, and the front end contains an open area that accesses the insulator to another connector mated therein. The invention may also incorporate a key element in the intermediate PCB slot that engages a matching notch on an edge of the PCB. The housing and insulator may include aligning fastener holes that receive fasteners shared by the components of the connector. The connector may also include one or more alignment ribs that extend from the back end forward along an interior side of the top segment of the housing. The pin connector may be assembled by inserting contacts into the front face of the insulator and inserting the insulator in the back end of the housing.

    • A pluggable male terminator for use with a female ribbon cable connector. The terminator is comprised of three basic parts that can snap together. The three members are a shroud having openings in the top, a PC board with pins extending from opposed surfaces, and a cover with recesses therein. The pins are complementary in shape and size to the openings in the shroud and the recesses in the cover. Further, the pins are aligned with the openings in the shroud and the recesses. For assembly, the pins on the PC board are inserted into the recesses in the cover openings in the shroud and the parts are pushed together. The pins extending from the shroud are adapted to be inserted into recesses in the female ribbon cable connector.

    • A portable lightweight combination laptop and pad computer has a display mounted on a main housing for movement between a closed position and an open position. In the closed position, a keyboard is covered by the undersurface of the display and the display viewing surface remains visible so that the computer may be used in the pad mode with a conductive stylus for data and command entry. In the open position, the keyboard is exposed so that the computer may be used in a laptop or desk top mode, or in a combined mode including the pad mode. The display is mounted to the housing by a four bar hinge mechanism, and a pair of latches are provided approximately mid-way between the front and rear portions of the housing along the side margins to securely latch the display in the closed position for storage, transit or use in the pad mode.A removable power pack, which attaches to the rear of the housing, carries battery power and a charging circuit for supplying power to the computer elements contained within the housing.

    • A battery compartment for portable electrical equipment such as computers, tape recorders, VCR recorders, camera flash equipment and other such devices has an internal configuration and appropriate electrical connections to receive at least two different types of battery cells which may be of different dimensions. These can include standard dry cell batteries and rechargeable NiCad batteries, for example. The power pickup from the two types of cells is different, so that non-rechargeable dry cells can be isolated from charge when external power is attached to the portable device, while rechargeable cells are not isolated from the charge. The different dimensions are accommodated by orientation of the one type of cell-receiving spaces at right angles to the other type of cell-receiving spaces so that incorrect placement of the cell types is prevented.

    • A hand held portable computer is secured to a peripheral computer component or expansion module in a snap-on arrangement which automatically effects engagement of bus connectors between the two components. The hand held computer has four openings in its back or under side. Two of the slot-like openings have fittings within them or are so shaped as to receive L-shaped or hook-shaped brackets of the peripheral component. The brackets may be inserted in the slot openings when the computer and the expansion module are held obliquely angled with respect to each other. The computer is then swung down until its back or under side engages against the top of the peripheral component, whereupon a pair of protruding hook members extending at the top surface of the peripheral component engage the computer and snap into locking engagement in the adjacent slot openings. The bus connection is made when the two components are brought together.
