For each area, the encoder decides which of frame-based or field-based orthogonal transformation will be most efficient at reducing spatial redundancy in that area. For each area, the encoder decides which of frame-based or field-based predictive encoding will be most efficient at reducing temporal redundancy in that area. The encoder encodes each area of the picture frame using the most efficient orthogonal transformation technique and using the most efficient predictive encoding technique to produce an encoded signal. A decoder decodes the encoded signal. The encoded signal is recorded on a recording medium, transmitted over a transmission channel, or broadcast.

摘要： An information recording medium and a reproducing device therefor which can realize varied reproduction from data recorded with plural channels and improve the operability. TOC information is recorded at a start point of a disk, and in succession thereto plural kinds of information are recorded on a plurality of tracks. Video data, audio data and superimpose data each having plural channels are time-division multiplexed and recorded on each track. A default value relating to a synthesis method for the plural channels is recorded as one of the TOC information or at a header portion of each block of the video data, the audio data and the superimpose data. In another aspect, data in each of plural channels recorded in the disk is supplied through decoders to a synthesizers. A default corresponding to a predetermined channel is stored in a nonvolatile memory, and the default channel is automatically selected by the synthesizer.

摘要： An apparatus and method for preparing a variable-rate coded signal, generated by compressing a digital input signal using a variable compression ratio and including a signal portion of a predetermined type, for recording on a recording medium. In the apparatus, a circuit generates a flag signal indicating the signal portion of the a predetermined type in the variable-rate coded signal. A signal-type marker generating circuit generates a signal-type marker in response to the flag signal. Finally, a circuit multiplexes the signal-type marker with the variable-rate coded signal to produce a multiplexed signal for recording on the recording medium. The signal-type marker is located adjacent to the signal portion of the predetermined type to indicate the signal portion of the predetermined type in the multiplexed signal. Where the multiplexed signal is divided into packs of plural packets, the signal marker is included in an entry pack located immediately preceding a packet that includes the signal portion of the predetermined type. Where the multiplexed signal is divided into sectors and each sector includes a sector header, the signal marker is included as subcode in the sector header of a sector that includes the signal portion of a predetermined type.

摘要： Apparatus for deriving from a motion picture film for transfer to a video recording medium a video signal having increased vertical resolution for display using progressive scanning. In the apparatus, a deriving system derives the video signal from the motion picture film; a flag signal generating circuit generates a flag signal indicating that the video signal is for display using progressive scanning; and a recording system records the video signal and the flag signal in the recording medium. In a method of deriving from an interlaced high-definition video signal an interlaced standard-definition video signal having increased vertical resolution, the interlaced high-definition video signal is converted into a progressive high-definition video signal. The number of pixels in the progressive high-definition video signal is reduced to provide a progressive standard-definition video signal, which is converted into the interlaced standard-definition video signal. An apparatus for reproducing a video signal recorded on a recording medium includes a system for reproducing the video signal from the recording medium, and a circuit for extracting from the reproduced video signal a flag signal indicating a display scanning mode for the video signal. A display apparatus includes a circuit for receiving a flag signal indicating a display scanning mode for the video signal, and for generating a control signal; and a circuit, responsive to the control signal, for displaying the video signal in the display scanning mode.
