    • A recognition tool according to various examples of the invention intelligently recognizes natural input before it is passed to a destination or target application. More particularly, the recognition tool according to various examples of the invention provides better formatting for text recognized from natural input, based upon the context in which the text is being inserted into a target application. The recognition tool also provides various tools for correcting inaccurately recognized text. The recognition tool may allow a user to select only a part of an inaccurate text, and then identify alternate text candidates based upon the selected portion of the inaccurate text. Further, when the user selects text containing multiple words for correction, the recognition tool provides cross combinations of alternate text candidates for the user's selection. Still further, if the user replaces inaccurate text by submitting a new natural input object, the recognition tool ensures that the text recognized from the new natural input object is different from the inaccurate text been replaced. The recognition tool additionally affects the recognition experience after recognized text has been provided to the target application. The recognition tool provides the target application with the original natural input object for the recognized text, along with the alternate text candidates for that original natural input object. Thus, the target application can use the alternate text candidates to correct inaccurately recognized text. Further, a user can insert the original natural input object for recognized text within the target application.

    • Graphical user interfaces for computer display devices include a page bar control element that allows a user to easily and quickly navigate among the pages of a multiple page electronic document and/or among the pages of a plurality of electronic documents. In some examples, the page bar control element displayed on the computer system provides a visual representation of a multiple pages of the document(s), wherein the visual representation includes several tabs or markers, each marker representing one or more pages of the document(s). In some examples, the markers are rendered in colors that enable quick identification of the current page and/or the page being viewed as well as pages viewed in a riffling action. The page bar control element also may include a visual “flag” that helps users quickly located text that they have previously flagged or that the system has automatically flagged for them.

    • The color of a pixel is represented in a pixel storage word, wherein color coordinate data and intensity data are coded separately in two fields of the pixel storage word, the color field and the intensity field. This permits a range of colors to be represented in a relatively small number of bits. In one embodiment of the invention, each of the three color coordinates of an input color is coded separately. The coded color components are concatenated and placed in a coded color field of the pixel storage word. In another embodiment of the invention, the color coordinate data is encoded as a color index, a binary value which maps to color coordinate data according to a predefined color table. Intensity data is also encoded with a binary value. The coded intensity can represent the intensity directly, or can be an index to intensity data stored in a predetermined intensity table. The invention can also convert a pixel storage word into a pixel display word, wherein the latter is a representation of the color in a format that permits ready display. For a given pixel, the coded color component data is read from the pixel storage word and processed to yield three color coordinates. The resulting color coordinates are then modulated by intensity data corresponding to the coded intensity read from the pixel storage word. This produces a pixel display word comprising three color coordinates in a form that permits display.

    • Computer-readable media, computerized methods, and computer systems for intuitively surfacing a teaching animation that demonstrates a manual gesture recognized by a writing-pad tool are provided. Initially, the writing-pad tool is interrogated to determine a context of a computing environment associated with a touchscreen interface. Generally, determining includes recognizing a current condition of the writing-pad tool based on whether text is provided within a content-entry area generated thereby, ascertaining whether a focus of a cursor tool resides within the content-entry area based on whether a portion of the text is selected, and ascertaining which actions are available for invocation at the writing-pad tool based on the current condition and the focus of the cursor. The context of the computing environment is utilized to identify which teaching animations to promote to an active state. Typically the promoted teaching animations are associated with the actions ascertained as available for invocation.

    • A server architecture for a digital rights management system that distributes and protects rights in content. The server architecture includes a retail site which sells content items to consumers, a fulfillment site which provides to consumers the content items sold by the retail site, and an activation site which enables consumer reading devices to use content items having an enhanced level of copy protection. Each retail site is equipped with a URL encryption object, which encrypts, according to a secret symmetric key shared between the retail site and the fulfillment site, information that is needed by the fulfillment site to process an order for content sold by the retail site. Upon selling a content item, the retail site transmits to the purchaser a web page having a link to a URL comprising the address of the fulfillment site and a parameter having the encrypted information. Upon following the link, the fulfillment site downloads the ordered content to the consumer, preparing the content if necessary in accordance with the type of security to be carried with the content. The fulfillment site includes an asynchronous fulfillment pipeline which logs information about processed transactions using a store-and-forward messaging service.
