    • A hybrid inflator for a vehicle airbag module produces an initial release of essentially unheated, stored, pressurized gas from the gas storage chamber of the inflator by way of a projectile, releasable from a nozzle opening in a combustion chamber housing upon combustion of a gas-generating combustible material housed within the combustion chamber housing, which ruptures and passes through a frangible burst element retaining the stored, pressurized gas in the gas storage chamber of the inflator, thereby permitting, initially, the unheated, stored, pressurized gas to discharge through the ruptured burst element and flow externally past the combustion chamber housing in an isolation housing and then to exit the inflator through gas exhaust ports in the inflator.

    • A side impact airbag module assembly adapted to mount on the exterior of the side of a seat back of an automobile seat back having an access opening and receiving means within a internal structural member. The side impact airbag module assembly includes an airbag module frame having a mounting flange adapted to extend through the access opening in the seat cover and having thereon self fasteners that secure the flange in the receiving means of the internal structural member of the seat. An airbag cushion and inflator assembly is secured to the frame, and an airbag module cover is also secured to the airbag module frame to conceal and protect the airbag cushion and inflator assembly and the airbag module frame. The airbag module is provided in one variation with depth limiters that prevent the mounting flange from being inserted too far into the receiving means, and clamp supports which further secure the mounting flange to the internal structural member. In another variation, the airbag module has two spaced apart mounting flanges.

    • A “hybrid” inflator having an extended filling capacity is disclosed. This inflator is designed to deploy an inflatable curtain airbag. The inflator will have an inner chamber that is connected to an outer chamber by a bleed hole. The inner chamber has a first supply of gas and a pyrotechnic material. This first supply of gas is sufficient to inflate an inflatable curtain after ignition of the pyrotechnic material. The outer chamber has a second supply of gas. The second supply of gas bleeds out of the outer chamber through the inner chamber and into the inflatable curtain. The inflatable curtain may be initially filled by the first supply of gas in the inner chamber while the second supply of gas slowly bleeds out of the inflator into the curtain to maintain the curtain at a desired pressure sufficient to provide impact protection to the vehicle occupant.

    • An inflator including a chamber that houses a quantity of inflation gas. The chamber is sealed by a burst disk. A punch is also added. The punch is positioned proximate the burst disk. An initiator is also added to the inflator. The initiator includes a cylinder storing a quantity of ignitable material. The cylinder also includes a folded wall with a closed end, wherein upon ignition of the ignitable material, the folded wall unfolds causing the punch to fail the burst disk. The inflator may also be designed such that the folded wall and the closed end retain all of the products formed by ignition of the ignitable material within the cylinder. The inflator may also be designed such that actuation of the initiator does not cause a flash.
