    • A system and method for transmitting multiple independent data streams from subsets of a plurality of radio antennas. The method includes determining by the receiver, an antenna partitioning, including relative phase rotations to be applied to each antenna, that results in the highest channel capacity among the possible partitionings. The receiver then provides partitioning information to the transmitter, including the number of antenna subsets, which antennas are included in each subset, the capacity of the data stream to be transmitted from each antenna subset, and the relative phase rotations to be applied to the antennas in each subset. The transmitter partitions the plurality of radio antennas into mutually exclusive subsets in accordance with the partitioning information, applies the relative phase rotation to each antenna, and transmits an independent data stream from each subset of antennas with a rate not greater than the stream capacity.

    • A method and a receiver (mobile station) are described herein for mitigating interference in a radio signal received from a base station and interfered for example by at least one co-channel base station, at least one adjacent channel base station and/or additive white Gaussian noise. The receiver mitigates the interference by using an enhanced reduced-state sequence estimation (RSSE) technique that selects a best set partition which is used to partition a joint signal set that is a function of symbols and channel coefficients associated with the radio signal. The best set partition is selected by exploiting estimated channel responses and/or other channel parameters like rotation and frequency offsets. And, the best set partition describes which signal states of the joint signal set are to be combined together for reduced-state joint demodulation of the radio signal or reduced-state equalization of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel.

    • A plurality of timings are estimated for a received signal wherein the plurality of timings correspond to a plurality of transmitted signals. The received signal is then sampled in accordance with the plurality of timings, to produce a plurality of sample streams from the received signal. Channel estimates are produced for the plurality of transmitted signals and metrics are computed using the sample streams and the channel estimates. Information symbols corresponding to the transmitted signals are detected by using the metrics. Accordingly, by using multiple timings for a received signal, rather than using a common timing, the number of channel taps that are used may be reduced and the accuracy of symbol detection may be increased. The channel estimates may be produced by generating pulse-shape information and producing channel estimates for the multiple transmitted signals using the received signal and the pulse-shape information. Channel estimates may be produced that correspond to a plurality of symbol sequence hypotheses. Channel estimates may be updated using an error signal.
