    • Since a certain relationship exists between a pupillary distance at a viewing distance and a pupillary distance to another viewing distance, the pupillary distance at a desired viewing distance can be obtained by making a predetermined correction in the results of a pupillary distance measurement at a fixed viewing distance, without requiring a convexed lens in the device to be moved. The fixed viewing distance is preferably set at a small value such as 1 to 2 meters so that problems such as failure in forming a fused image due to machine near sightedness can be avoided. The device has a sighting mark forming device which can be installed at any portion of the measuring device for enabling easy assembly, unlike conventional measuring devices which require that the sighting mark forming device is located in relation to the (corneal) vertex distance of the subject.

    • Engine operating parameters are detected to see whether the engine is in idle state or not. Then the speed of the engine is detected to determine whether engine speed is varying or not. To this end, a plurality of engine speed data are averaged to find an average engine speed which will be used as a reference value for the comparison with respect to a latest instantaneous engine speed. Ignition timing is either retarded or advanced for maintaining the engine speed at a desired value in such a manner that the amount of correction of the ignition timing is determined by deriving data from a memory in which relationship between the engine speed variation and ignition timing correction amount is stored in the form of a map. In the case that the average engine speed is far deviated from a setting engine speed, the average value is not used as the reference value, but rather the setting speed is used to find the difference. In the case that no setting engine speed is provided, the average engine speed is always used as the reference value. In addition to ignition timing control, the airflow bypassing the throttle valve may be controlled so that idle engine speed does not fluctuate.

    • In a cup attaching apparatus, a cup is attached as a processing jig to a subject lens along a reference axis, the lens and an index plate having an index of a predetermined pattern are illuminated by substantially parallel rays of light shaped into a diameter larger than a diameter of the lens so that an image of the lens and an image of the index are projected onto a screen, and the index image projected onto the screen is detected, whereas an entire image of the lens projected onto the screen is picked up. An optical center of the lens with respect to the reference axis is obtained on the basis of the index image detected by said detecting means, thereby displaying in a superposed manner alignment information indicating a relative position of the optical center with respect to the reference axis and the image thus picked up. The alignment is effected while observing the displayed information.
