    • An EPON for providing a subscriber with a high speed/high capacity data service and a real time digital broadcasting/image service includes an OLT for switching digital broadcasting/image data according to broadcasting/image selection information from each ONT, modulating the switched data into frequencies assigned to each ONT, coupling a broadcasting/image signal with a communication signal, and transmitting the coupled signal. The digital broadcasting/image data is transmitted from an outside broadcaster, the broadcasting/image signal is a combination of the modulated signals, and the communication signal is obtained by optically modulating communication data from an IP network. Further included in the EPON are multiple ONTs, and a divider for dividing the signal from the OLT for routing to each of the multiple ONTs, combining signals from the multiple ONTs, and transmitting the combined signal to the OLT.

    • An Ethernet-PON integrates broadcast/communication through time division multiplexing, which provides users with high-speed, high-volume communication data and high-quality, real-time digital broadcast/image data. An OLT performs a switching operation on a plurality of digital broadcast/image data received from an external broadcaster according to respective broadcast/image selection information from users, time-division-multiplexes the data into a broadcast/image signal, multiplexes the signal and communication data from an IP network into a frame, and electro-optically converts the frame and transmits to the frame to ONTs through an optical splitter. Each ONT receives and photoelectrically converts the signal from the OLT, and performs frame & time-slot demultiplexing to output the entire received communication signals and broadcast/image information contained in a time-slot assigned to the ONT to a corresponding user. The ONT receives a communication signal and broadcast/image selection information from the user, and outputs them to the OLT through the splitter.

    • A method for upstream traffic control in an Ethernet-based passive optical network, adapted for preventing a penalty phenomenon occurring in making upstream data transfer on basis of High Priority First Allocation (HPFA) algorithm. The method includes the steps of determining whether are any data frames to transfer in the first buffer; if it is determined that there are any data frames to transfer in the first buffer, determining whether the data frame does not exceed a low water mark indicative of a reference value set up to ensure the minimum transfer traffic; if it is determined that the data frame in the first buffer does not exceed the low water mark, then transferring the data frame stored in the first buffer and determining whether the data frame in a second buffer does not exceed the low water mark; if it is determined that the data frame in the second buffer does not exceed the low water mark, then determining whether the data frame to transfer in a third buffer does not exceed the low water mark; if it is determined that the data frame to transfer in the third buffer does not exceed the low water mark, then transferring the respective data frame stored in the second and third buffers.
