    • A new casing opening formation apparatus has been invented which includes an explosive charge and an apparatus for positioning the explosive charge in a casing in a cased wellbore at a desired location. In one aspect the apparatus includes a drill bit or other drilling device releasably connected to a bit diversion device; and in another aspect the apparatus includes milling apparatus for milling the casing. In one aspect the opening created is a radial ledge for facilitating casing penetration by a mill which mills out a window. In one aspect the opening created has such a radial ledge and includes a slot for inhibiting or preventing coring of the mill. In one aspect the opening created is such a slot alone. In one aspect the opening created is a completed window for sidetracking operations, no further milling is needed and drilling commences in the formation adjacent the explosively created opening. In one aspect the positioning apparatus is a whipstock and a mill is releasably secured to the whipstock to mill past a hole in the casing created by explosion of the explosive charge so that a desired casing window is formed in a single trip of the apparatus into the wellbore.

    • A hydraulically controlled apparatus responsive to changes in well annulus pressure is disclosed. The apparatus is run into a well bore intersecting an oil and gas reservoir with perforations communicating the oil and gas reservoir with the well bore. The apparatus has an associated packer to effectively seal off the perforations in the well bore. The apparatus contains a cylindrical housing with ports on the top end and bottom end, and an operating mandrel is disposed therein. A disengaging sleeve operably connected with the operating mandrel allows the ports contained on the lower portion of the cylindrical housing below the packer to be opened and closed selectively, thereby allowing communication of the reservoir pressure through the apparatus. The disengaging sleeve and operating mandrel are activated by either an increase or decrease in annulus pressure.

    • A vent subassembly includes a vent body having an opening which is covered or uncovered dependent upon the location of a vent sleeve relative to the vent body. The vent subassembly can be connected below a packer, and the vent sleeve can be connected to a perforator so that movement of the vent sleeve is concurrently communicated to the perforator, such as for initiating the firing of the perforator. The vent sleeve is moved by an actuator subassembly, which is to be connected above the packer if the vent and actuator subassemblies are used with a packer. The actuator subassembly has a piston housing, a piston slidably disposed in the piston housing, and a connector string extending from the piston to the vent sleeve. The piston is responsive to a differential pressure existing between the annulus outside the actuator subassembly and an interior pressure within the actuator subassembly.

    • Methods and apparatus are provided for setting a packer and for placing a seal assembly into the packer bore on a single trip into the borehole. Such apparatus includes a releasable mechanism coupling the seal assembly in fixed relation to the packer until such time as the packer is at least partially set. Methods and apparatus of the present invention also include a mechanism for hydraulically setting a packer without any manipulation of the tubing string. A pair of hydraulic pistons are utilized to move in opposite directions and exert forces on both a packer actuating sleeve and the packer body to set the packer. Methods and apparatus are provided for actuating well tools in response to the hydrostatic pressure in the well. Through use of such apparatus, a chamber at atmospheric pressure is placed in communication with one side of a hydraulically movable member, the other side of which is exposed to hydrostatic pressure. The low pressure of the atmospheric chamber causes movement of the member to operate the well tool.
