    • A system and method include receiving a telephone number corresponding to a unique pair of first and second parameters in which the first parameter corresponds to a device having a plurality of ports and the second parameter corresponds to one of the ports of the device. A storage includes units respectively corresponding to different first parameters with each unit respectively having a physical location in the storage. Each unit has members respectively corresponding to different second parameters with each of the second parameters respectively corresponding to a member of each unit. The parameters are determined using the telephone number. A physical location in storage of a unit corresponding to the first parameter is determined. The member corresponding to the second parameter of the unit which corresponds to the first parameter is then identified.

    • A database stores a plurality of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) profiles for a plurality of different potential usage patterns for a digital subscriber line (DSL) service. The database associates each of the ATM profiles with a respective buffer size for a network element that is to communicate ATM traffic associated with the DSL service. A data collector collects application layer traffic data for usage of the DSL service by a DSL user. An ATM buffer manager selects an ATM profile, from the plurality of ATM profiles in the database, based on its similarity to the application layer traffic data. The ATM buffer manager allocates to the DSL user a first buffer size in the network element based on the buffer size being associated with the ATM profile in the database.

    • The present application discloses an automated digital subscriber line performance control system comprising a computer system including a logic module to evaluate performance of a plurality of DSL lines and to automatically select a set of DSL lines from the plurality of DSL lines, a line profile database responsive to the computer system, the line profile database providing a plurality of line profiles in response to a request from the computer system, and a digital subscriber line access multiplexer coupled to the computer system. The digital subscriber line access multiplexer is configured to measure a performance parameter of a plurality of physical DSL lines and to change a profile for at least one of the plurality of DSL lines. The set of DSL lines has degraded performance characteristics based on historical performance data.
