    • A wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU) for a code division multiple access (CDMA) telecommunication system utilizes a plurality of protocol layers including a physical layer and a medium access control (MAC) layer such that the MAC layer provides data to the physical layer via plurality of transport channels (TrCHs). Each TrCH is associated with a set of logical channels. The physical layer receives blocks of data for transport such that the transport blocks (TBs) includes a MAC header and logical channel data for a selected logical channel associated with a given TrCH. Each TB has one of a selected limited finite number of TB bit sizes. The logical channel data for each TB has a bit size evenly divisible by a selected integer N greater than three (3). The MAC header for each TB has a bit size such that the MAC header bit size plus the logical channel data bit size equals one of the TB bit sizes. A fixed MAC header bit size is associated with each logical channel for a given TrCH and is selected such that each fixed MAC header bit size equals M modulo N where M is an integer greater than 0 and less than N, i.e. each MAC header for a given TrCH has a bit offset equal to M. This permits physical layer padding of each TB with a predetermined number of bits such that the same number of padding bits are used for all TBs for the same TrCH whereby the total number of bits in the padded TBs are equally divisible by N to facilitate up link and down link communications.

    • A wireless communication system, which supports enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) data transmissions, includes a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), at least one Node-B and a radio network controller (RNC). The WTRU includes a buffer, a data lifespan timer, a data retransmission counter, a hybrid-automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) process and a controller. The timer establishes a lifespan for at least one data block stored in the buffer. If physical resources have not been allocated for a data block associated with a lifespan timer that is close to expiration, the WTRU sends an urgent channel allocation request. If physical resources have been allocated, the data block is prioritized for transmission with respect to other data blocks. The data block is discarded if the lifespan timer expires or if the WTRU receives feedback information indicating that the data block was successfully received by the Node-B.

    • The present invention discloses a method and system for enabling efficient reduction of TFCs in the TFCS to achieve desired transmission, while remaining within desired power and data requirements. Upon the UE transmission power requirement exceeding the maximum or allowable transmission power the MAC shall be informed for subsequent TFC selection of all TFCs that currently exceed this limit. The UE will then chose the TFC with the next lower transmission power requirement and the sequence will continue until an acceptable TFC is determined. The present invention also enables the replacement of the TFCs in the TFCS and advanced determination of non-supported TFCS. The TFCs that require transmission power greater then the maximum or allowed UE transmission power shall be determined continuously in every TTI, not just in TTIs where the maximum power has been exceeded.

    • A method and apparatus for uplink synchronization during handover are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) measures a downlink receipt timing difference between a source Node-B and a target Node-B. The WTRU calculates a target Node-B timing advance value based on the downlink receipt timing difference, a source Node-B timing advance value, and a relative downlink transmit timing difference between the target Node-B and the source Node-B. The WTRU then applies the target Node-B timing advance value in transmission to the target Node-B. The source Node-B may calculate the relative downlink transmit timing difference between the target Node-B and the source Node-B, and send it to the WTRU. The source Node-B may provide the source Node-B timing advance value more frequently during handover. The WTRU may measure the downlink receipt timing difference by averaging multiple first significant paths (FSPs) over a certain time window.
