    • A motor and fan structure 10 includes direct current motor assembly 18 having a stator assembly 20 including a flux plate 22 and permanent magnet structure 24 mounted on the flux plate 22. The flux plate 22 defines one end of the motor assembly and define a magnetic flux path of the motor assembly. The motor assembly also includes a generally cylindrical armature assembly 32 defining another end of the motor assembly. The armature assembly is radially wound with windings 40, and an outermost part of the armature assembly and at least a portion of the windings is exposed to the environment. The structure includes a fan 12 having a generally cylindrical hub 14 receiving and covering the outermost part and the portion of the windings of the armature assembly. The hub 14 has a plurality of blades 16 extending therefrom. Thus, the weight and axial length of the motor assembly can be reduced since no case is required to cover the armature assembly yet the armature assembly is protected by the fan hub.

    • A pressure regulator includes a valve, mechanical advantage device, actuator, controller and pressure sensor. The valve is disposed between an inlet port and an outlet port. The valve includes a pintle and seat. An actuator is provided to move the pintle away from the seat to allow the flow of gas from the inlet port to the outlet port and a pintle return spring is provided to bias the pintle towards seat. The actuator is configured to move the pintle in response to the magnitude of a control signal. A control system is provided to receive a gas pressure signal from a pressure transducer at the outlet port which detects the gas pressure at the outlet port and generate a control signal having a magnitude proportional to the detected gas pressure.

    • A permanent magnet D.C. electric motor 100 includes a motor housing 118 having first and second ends and a generally cylindrical periphery between the ends. The first end 120 is substantially closed and has an end of a shaft 124 extending there from. The first end includes vent holes 16 therein. The second end 122 is substantially open and defines a plurality of ventilation holes 126 in the cylindrical periphery. An end cap 130 closes the second end and covers another end of the shaft. The end cap has a base 132 and a flange 134 extending transversely with respect to the base. The flange is disposed over a portion of the cylindrical periphery of the housing so as to define a gap G there-between such that air may pass through the gap and through the ventilation holes and vent holes to cool the motor, with the end cap inhibiting foreign material from entering the ventilation holes.

An actuator 28 moves the closure structure 20 from a closed position, covering the additional opening 18, to an opened position, uncovering the additional opening 18. A sensor 34 detects ram air at the shroud 12. A controller 32 receives a signal from the sensor 34 indicating the initial presence of ram air and, in response thereto, sends a signal to the actuator 28 to move the closure structure 20 to the opened position.

A gate terminal G of the FET is constructed and arranged to receive pulse width modulation output from an electronic control unit 64 which is remote from the motor so as to enable able the motor to operate at more than one speed. A method of integrating a FET in a motor is also provided.

    • A brush system for providing an electric connection to a rotating commutator wheel of an electric machine is disclosed. The brush system has a switched brush selectively switchable between an engaged position and a disengaged position and a switch connected to the switched brush and formed of a shape-memory-alloy. The switch attains an extended state at a first temperature and attaining a retracted state at a second temperature, for switching the switched brush alternately to the respective engaged position and the respective disengaged position. The switch includes a temperature conditioner for varying a temperature at the switch between the first temperature and the second temperature. The temperature condition may be an electric network wherein the internal resistance of the switch allows for heating of the switch to the second temperature.
