    • A cellular communication system comprises a first communication network arranged to use a single cell identifier reuse pattern; a second communication network comprising a cluster of communication cells and arranged to use a common cell identifier reuse pattern for broadcast transmissions. The cellular communication system further comprises management logic (146) having broadcast mode logic (150) operably coupled to at least the second communication network; and a plurality of wireless serving communication units operably coupled to the management logic. The broadcast mode logic (150) applies the same common cell identifier to be used by the plurality of wireless serving communication units in transmitting broadcast communications across the cluster of communication cells in the second network.

    • An arrangement (100) and method for RF filtering in a Node B of a UMTS TDD system by providing: a DAC converter (130) converting digital signals to analog signals; providing a narrow band analogue channel filter (150) filtering the analog signals; and providing a digital pre-equalizer FIR filter (120) coupled before the DAC (120) to filter the digital signals, the digital pre-equalizer filter means substantially correcting for non linear phase response (122) non-ideality and amplitude response non-ideality (124) in the analogue channel filter (150). This provides the following advantage(s): it enables 3GPP Node B co-location specifications to be met while providing both good transmit accuracy and acceptable ISI performance; and it allows filter centre frequency to be field tuned in software, permitting a basic RF single-channel filter to used with its centre frequency being field adjustable to a desired value centred on a UMTS channel.

    • Paging group identifiers are associated with groups of user equipment (UEs) in a hierarchical manner. A controller, such as a scheduler in an enhanced Node B, may address the groups of UEs using group identifiers over control channels. The controller may select a group identifier for a group of UEs from higher or lower levels of the hierarchy, depending upon the number of UEs to be paged and/or the number of available control channels over which paging resources are dynamically allocated to the UEs. UEs within the addressed groups monitor the corresponding paging channels for paging messages.

    • A method of requesting a communication resource by a wireless communication unit operating in a wireless communication system. The wireless communication system provides for uplink and downlink channels. The method includes the steps of: allocating a dedicated communication channel to said wireless communication unit by a wireless communication serving unit; transmitting a communication resource request message (130) on said dedicated uplink channel by said wireless communication unit (110) to said wireless communication serving unit (120); and transmitting an access allocation message (140) to said wireless communication unit (110) from said wireless communication serving unit (120) on said dedicated downlink channel. A communication system and communication unit are also provided.This provides the advantage that a dedicated channel is used for requesting shared resources thereby avoiding various problems, including clashes, associated with using a random access channel.
