    • A damper for use with a hydraulic actuator of the type including a master cylinder and a slave cylinder with a conduit interconnecting the outlet of the master cylinder and the inlet of the slave cylinder. The damper is positioned in the conduit between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder and includes a housing member defining a chamber opening in one face of the housing member and a mounting bracket plate. The mounting bracket plate includes a housing portion corresponding in size and configuration to the one face of the housing member and is positioned against the one face of the housing member to coact with the housing member to seal the chamber. The bracket plate further includes a bracket portion extending outwardly from the housing portion in the form of mounting arms which are utilized to facilitate mounting of the damper to a fixed vehicle structure. A diaphragm is fixedly positioned in the chamber and divides the chamber into a first chamber portion between one side of the diaphragm and the housing member and a second chamber portion between the opposite side of the diaphragm and the housing portion of the bracket plate. This construction enables a single member to function to define the damper diaphragm chamber and further define the mounting bracket to secure the damper within the vehicle.

The bore is in fluid communication with the fluid chambers such that the pressure within the first fluid chamber acts on a first side of the compensation piston, and the pressure within the second fluid chamber acts on a second end of the compensation piston which is opposite the first end. The compensation housing can be incorporated within the service piston or can be remotely located from the master cylinder.

The device comprises a valve unit (20) which is installed hydraulically in series with and between the master cylinder (3) and the slave cylinder (4). A first passage (53) which extends in the valve body (32) or in the valve housing (21) permits restricted fluid flow through the valve (20) when the valve unit (20) is closed. A device (33,35,41) keeps the valve unit (20) open when the clutch is located in positions between a position of maximum disengagement and a second position located close to the position in which the clutch begins to engage. During an engagement of the clutch which is so rapid that there is a risk of damage to the transmission, the force of a spring (40) which attempts to open the valve unit (20) becomes less than the force exercised by the hydraulic fluid on the valve body (32) and attempts to close the valve unit (20), thus causing it to be moved towards its seat (31), whereupon the fluid is forced to flow through the passage (53).
