    • A method and machine for machining the surface of a valve seat (3) which is required to have a very accurate alignment with respect to a guide bore of a valve guide (2).In order to be capable of machining the valve seat surface in high roundness while maintaining a high concentricity with the guide bore, a pilot member (4) is moved forward inclinably to catch a guide bore of a valve guide (2) at its front end; the pilot member is further moved forward bendably while following the guide bore; when the pilot member has reached the desired position, the posture of the pilot member in the position is firmly held; and the surface of the valve seat (3) is machined by moving edged tool members (5a) forwardly while rotating the edged tool members (5a) which are arranged coaxially with the pilot member. A machine for practicing the method includes a forwardly and backwardly movable spindle (8), a pilot member (4) bendable at (7) with respect to the spindle, a bearing member (15) for the pilot member provided alignably with respect to the pilot member, an arrangement (17) for holding the bearing member coaxially with the pilot member, and edged tool members (5a) arranged to be rotatable coaxially with the pilot member and movable forwardly and backwardly together with the pilot member.

    • A hydraulic tappet or lash adjuster of simplified design is disclosed for use in the valve train of an internal combustion engine equipped with dual ramp cams. In one embodiment, the disclosed tappet is designed to respond to the presence or absence of control pressure supplied through a single supply port to cause variation in the timed relationship of valve opening and piston movement whereby the internal combustion engine may be operated in a power mode or a braking mode. In another embodiment, a pressure relief outlet is provided in the tappet for cooperation with a pressure relief port to insure collapse of the tappet thereby to prevent the valve from being opened beyond a pre-determined fully open position.

    • A valve assembly for an internal combustion engine having a cylinder head including a combustion chamber and an induction passage terminating at a valve seat defining an inlet port to the combustion chamber in the combustion side of the cylinder head, includes a valve head fitting over and engaging sealingly the valve seat. Mounting means disposed inside of the combustion chamber in the combustion side of the cylinder head connects swingably the valve member to the valve head between a closed position in sealing engagement with the valve seat and an open position substantially out of alignment with the valve seat. A valve stem is reciprocatively journaled in a stem guide bore with one end of the valve stem extending from the cylinder head and its other end connected to the valve head. The axis of the induction passage is substantially parallel to the axis of the combustion chamber to further facilitate an increased volumetric efficiency. The mounting means for the valve head is disposed between the induction passage and an exhaust passage so that when the valve head for the induction passage swings to its open position, it is disposed between and in blocking relationship with the exhaust passage.
