    • Methods, apparatus, and improved structure having as their common basis the sequence of collapsing a piston ring in a fixture approximating engine bore diameter, and separately lapping a major portion of the ring side and a remaining locality -- narrow in width, of band size and preferably line size -- of the side of the ring while it is so collapsed, until circumferentially continuous portions of the side are flat in the range of at least about ten to five light bands.     • The present invention relates to an apparatus for refinishing the contoured surface of a substantially cylindrical Yankee drier drum without removing the drum from the paper machine. The invention is exemplified by an improved grinding apparatus consisting of a back stand grinder for forming the surface on the drum, a carriage upon which the grinder is movably mounted, a rigid cast iron bed with ways to guide the carriage parallel to the drier drum axis, means to traverse the carriage and a unique cam to control the movement of the grinder on the carriage in a manner which causes the grinder to generate the entire surface contour desired to be formed on the drum. The invention also includes the unique cam. The invention is further exemplified by a periphery on the grinder contact wheel contoured to adapt to the drum surface contour over the entire face of the drum.

    • A machine for buffing the tread face of a tire casing in preparation for retreading features a buffing rasp and a tire mounting shaft assembly which lies in a horizontal plane so that the rasp and tire casing revolve in vertical planes. The tire mounting assembly is supported on a floor-mounted radius adjustment carriage which is motor driven with precision control. The tire mounting assembly is pivotally supported on the radius adjustment carriage for swinging in a horizontal arc relative to the periphery of the horizontal axis rasp. The mounting assembly may also pivot in a vertical plane under control of a precision screw actuator to regulate the depth of cut by the rotary buffing rasp. An overhead counterbalanced side wall buffer attachment is provided. A standard type floor-mounted electric motor for the buffing rasp is utilized and the latter has a long shaft with widely spaced bearings on an extremely sturdy pedestal. An independently controlled kick cylinder assures easy and rapid inflation of the tire casing. A small conveniently located front console renders the machine easy to use with the operator having a clear view of vital operations.

    • A buffing apparatus for grinding the tread portion of tires preparatorily to retreading. The apparatus comprises a buffer unit for mounting a buffer assembly and adjusting its position, and a tire supporting unit for holding a tire in place and rotating same during the grinding operation of its tread portion. The buffer assembly is mounted for moving back-and-forth in an arcuate path generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the tire, and the tire is mounted on a drivable spindle supported on a tower that is arranged so as to be adjustably displaced in a straight line essentially radially of the tire. The back-andforth motion of the buffer assembly is effected by means of the combination of an electric motor coupled to a worm screw that carries a threaded block, the electric motor being capable of rotating the worm screw in either direction, and limit switches are used for reversing the sense of rotation of the motor and the worm screw. Similarly, the displacement of the tower is commanded by means of a reversible electric motor coupled to a worm screw onto which is mounted a threaded block, and the extreme positions of the tower are determined by the location of slidable limit switches.

    • Apparatus and method for improving the radial force uniformity of a pneumatic tire rotated under a loaded condition. The rotating loaded tire is sensed with load cells that develop signals corresponding to radial force variations and developed in correspondence with the areas of the periphery of the tire treads that develop the signals. A reference signal level is established and all radial force variation signals over this level are applied through logic circuitry to memory devices, in the form of flip-flops. Grinding means that grind off or remove the corresponding irregularities on areas that develop the radial force variations above the given level are rendered effective by the logic circuitry to grind these areas when they present themselves, subsequent to being sensed or graded, to the grinders. The memory devices are allocated to respective areas on the circumference of the tire treads so that the variation signals developed by the individual areas are memorized by corresponding memory elements which in conjunction with the logic circuitry make certain that the grinders are activated and grind their corresponding areas only and to the extent necessary to make the area conform to the selected radial force level.
