    • A transverse-electric waveguide filter is provided for transmitting a fundamental transverse-electric mode in a first frequency band while attenuating an associated higher-order transverse-electric mode in a second frequency band. The filter includes transverse corrugations between input and output waveguide ports to attenuate the higher-order transverse-electric mode. The input and output waveguide ports have a characteristic impedance and the filter also incudes a ridge system that is coupled between the first and second waveguide ports and is configured to provide a signal-path impedance that substantially matches the characteristic impedance to thereby support transmission of the fundamental transverse-electric mode from the input port to the output port.

    • A high frequency microwave energy propagation and restricting device uses a structural arrangement which propagates applied electromagnetic energy with counter-directional phase and group velocity, and the phase velocity is made to be lower or higher than the phase velocity which the electromagnetic energy is propagated. The directionalizing and restriction of the input electromagnetic energy into the device is controlled by means of an arrangement using a high-pass filter wherein the phase velocity and the group velocity of the electromagnetic waves are opposed to each other; alternatively, the device uses a low-pass filter wherein the group velocity and phase velocity of the electromagnetic waves have the same direction. The high-frequency energy propagation and restricting devices as of the present invention may be advantageously utilized and applied in microwave energy ovens or furnaces which may be of the static or the conveyor type. The device of the invention makes it possible to prevent and/or monitor loss of microwave energy from the zone in which energy is intended to be utilized to treat a workpiece or a product.

    • A low pass filter is provided for rectangular waveguide of the type employed for launching electromagnetic energy in microwave ovens. The filter substantially rejects the transmission of harmonic frequencies of the fundamental generator operating frequency as well as higher order waveguide modes such as the TE20, TE30 etc. The structure described has a corrugated configuration with ribs defining alternate cavities and constrictions having cutoff frequency characteristics. Each of the ribs are slotted to substantially suppress such higher order modes of the harmonic frequenices particularly the second harmonic. The structure is spaced from the broad rectangular waveguide walls to define two propagation paths for the electromagnetic energy. Lightweight conductive materials may be utilized. Rib structure is symmetrically disposed on opposing sides of a reference plane extending along the longitudinal axis of the waveguide.
