    • Provided is an archival recording medium and a method for recording information on same. The recording medium comprises a microporous polymeric layer and an energy-absorbing material, e.g., a layer of an energy-absorbing material such as a metal or dye/polymer layer deposited on the microporous layer. If desired, further dimensional stability and mechanical strength can be provided by a thermally stable substrate or by tensioning the medium within a rigid frame. Information is recorded by the energy-absorbing material heating up in localized irradiated regions and causing the controlled collapse of the microporous structure in the microporous polymer layer. The collapsed portions of the structure constitute the information which can then be read either by reflectance or transmission.

    • A method of recording information comprising the steps of: irradiating a light-absorbing material (which is arranged in contact with a polymer blend which changes in its phase condition between a homogeneous state and a phase-separated state in response to change of its temperature across its cloud point) with a laser beam for causing the light-absorbing material to absorb energy of the beam and generate a heat, whereby elevating the temperature of the polymer blend near the light-absorbing material to a temperature of above the cloud point to change the phase condition of the polymer blend into a state which is different from the original state before the elevation of the temperature; and rapidly cooling the polymer blend to fix the polymer blend in its changed phase condition. An information recording medium preferably employed for the method is also disclosed.

    • The invention relates to an information recording card using a semiconductor laser beam for writing and reading information. The card has a recording layer formed on a card substrate so as to closely cover at least a selected surface area of the substrate and may have a reflective metal layer on the back side of the recording layer. The material of the reacording layer is a polymer blend which exhibits phase transition and resultant changes in light transmittance and reflectance by heating and which is either a binary polymer blend of a vinylidene fluoride (VDf) base polymer, either PVDF or a copolymer of VDF and another F-containing monomer such as TFE, and an acrylic or methacrylic polymer represented by PMMA or a ternary copolymer comprising a vinyl ester polymer in addition to the components of the binary polymer blend. The thermally caused phase transition is reversible by slow cooling in the case of the binary polymer blend but is irreversible in the case of the ternary polymer blend.
