    • A disk drive is described having a capability of burnishing the sliders on demand by using a heater in the slider to thermally protrude the slider. Each slider includes a heating element with a sufficient thermal expansion stroke to bring the area of the slider containing the transducer into contact with the disk surface to burnish the slider. Preferably the heater is used to bring the slider into contact with the disk to burnish the lowest flying part of the slider body after the drive has been assembled, and remove most or all of the overcoat and recession, and exposing the transducers at the ABS. The burnish process is performed in situ in the drive and the drive is preferably hermetically sealed to reduce the risk of corrosion. The slider can be flown and magnetically tested prior to burnishing off the overcoat to avoid corroding the head before the drive is assembled.

    • An AAB slider has a leading edge generally impinging fluid flow due to movement of a medium relative to the slider. A cavity dam defines a continuous air bearing surface that extends over a region between the sides of the slider and between at least one sub-ambient cavity and the leading edge. Step level slots in the air bearing surface at the leading edge admit fluid into the region of the air bearing surface. Side rails on the slider extend rearward from the cavity dam to form the sub-ambient cavity. The air bearing surface is characterized by the absence of a channel adjacent the leading edge that extends between the sides of the slider. A center rail extends rearward from the cavity dam to the trailing edge and supports a transducer. The arrangement is such that airflow to the transducer is minimized, thus minimizing particulate matter from accumulating on the trailing edge slider features, including the transducer.

    • A magnetic head (slider) which requires no lapping is described. The head is fabricated with an air bearing surface that is parallel to the wafer surface. The saw cuts used to separate the individual sliders from the rest of the wafer are perpendicular to the air-bearing surface and do not pass through any critical features. The read and write components are formed from thin films disposed parallel to the air bearing surface and can be side-by-side or tandem in relation to the recording track. The stripe height of the read sensor is controlled by the deposition process rather than by lapping. Various embodiments of the read head include contiguous junction biasing, external hard magnet biasing, and in-stack biasing. In one embodiment a permeable field collector is included below the sensor layer structure. An aperture shield surrounding the sensor at the ABS is included in one embodiment.

    • A slider-mounted transducer has an integral wear pad for determining interference between the transducer and a disk surface. The wear pad intensifies interference events during disk drive testing and enables the threshold for slider fly-height to be set at a lower level. This, in turn, improves disk drive reliability during normal operation. The wear pad can be a carbon overlay deposited near the trailing edge of the slider or it can be an un-etched strip of alumina within a recessed region of the slider. The wear pad is substantially worn away during the test period, so it does not affect subsequent operation of the drive.

As this occurs, the water repellency of the end surface of the land portion is increased more than the water repellency of the air bearing portion, whereby the water repellency of the end surface of the slider base can be increased more than the water repellency of the end surface of the land portion.
